How often each seed level reaches the Final Four:
#1 seed 52 times
#2 seed 28 times
#3 seed 14 times
#4 seed 13 times
#5 seed 6 times
#6 seed 3 times
#7 seed 2 times
#8 seed 5 times
#9 seed 1 time
#10 seed 1 time
#11 seed 3 times
#12 through #16 seeds have NEVER made the Final Four.
Where you are seeded has a major role in whether you can reach the Final Four. #1 through #4 have a tremendous advantage, in both talent and level of competition in the early rounds. Yes, there are first or second round upsets, but the odds are stacked heavily with the top 4 seeds (16 teams).
I don’t care as long as WVU is #4 seed or higher in March Madness. That’s critical to a successful run because you don’t play any of the top 16 teams till the regional semifinals. The Final Four numbers by seed prove that.
That’s why the top 4 seeds have reached the Final Four far more than the 5 through 16 seeds. The number of Final Four appearances is in line with the seeding rank through #5. After that, lower seeds make it more times than higher seeds in some cases. It’s almost irrelevant.
As for next Monday's polls:
#17 Duke lost to North Carolina State
#1/#2 Villanova lost to Marquette
#1/#2 Kansas lost badly to #18 West Virginia
#4 Kentucky lost to Tennessee
#6 Florida State lost badly to Georgia Tech
#14 Notre Dame lost to #12 Virginia
#16 Creighton lost by 20 to Georgetown
That’s 7 ranked teams that lost in 3 days! With 4 days left before the next polls.
Also:
#5 Baylor only beat Texas Tech by 4
This may be the craziest March Madness ever!
And the pollsters, IF the Mountaineers beat Texas A&M, probably will be scratching their heads trying to figure out where WVU belongs.
