Why were some fans nervous?

I heard it on podcast after podcast the week before the game. There is nothing wrong with the be prepared mindset. That is a good thing. my point is that UD was presented as a very good by Many of the experts and it was therefore very easy for fans, given our history, to be more worried than we probably should have been.
Didn’t hear any podcasts, are you saying the experts were saying Delaware is extremely talented and we needed our best effort to beat them?
I’m betting this take is a total exaggeration by you!

Game was never in doubt.

Clear that many of you never played competitive sports. Have to believe we will beat anyone and everyone. Mindset is half the battle.

Time to change the culture. No more PTSD nonsense.

Go RU. National Championship coming soon!

You sound like an old poster who believed that if the fans FOCUSed the team would win.

This team was terrible 2 years ago and was less so last year due to the shear force of Schaino's will.

This year we beat Temple easily with but had 5 turnovers to help.
We didn't exactly blow out Syr.
FCS team before opening the B1G schedule at UM. And a top 5 FCS team at that. Any team could look past that game and lose. Especially a still not very good Rutgers team with a history of WTF games.

I thought the team might lose or at least struggle for the reasons above.

While I think the team is much better than 2 years ago I think we'll be lucky to play .500 in the B1G. There's another reason they might lose to a top 5 FCS team.

You are that old poster aren't you?

Then why did 6 of the 13 predictions by the OTB site, when asked to predict the outcome, had RU winning by 14 or less points. So called experts, whose job is to follow sports, predicating a close game.

OTB has fallen off the deep end. I can't stand their drivel anymore.

The # of ways Fudd and *** hurt this program - and this (the fan base reverting to the Shea “error”IS one of them) - is stunning.

You must be new here. Not too long ago we were crushed by Kansas, which is worse than almost anyone, even 1aa teams.

It wasn’t just them. I listened to several podcasts. When asked to predict all did the same thing, even those who had an UD reporter. Most either, after extolling the UD team and staff, predicted a one or two score game or a bigger RU victory but only because RU was deeper and bigger. They expected a close game through two or three quarters and then RU’s size and depth would take over and widen the score. I did not hear any “it will be over by half time” predictions. People expected this to be closer than it was, even the ones who predicted RU by a wide margin.

And now many of those people are saying we should not take too much from it because, after all, UD is only an FCs team.

TBH - I was not ever worried at the outcome of this game.

But, I am worried that, after finishing the easiest part of the schedule:
- there are 165 teams with a better O
- there are 84 teams with a better rush D

Unless those things don’t improve, not sure how we are going to get many, if any, wins the rest of the way.

Absolutely valid concerns. I'm not tone deaf. This team has some things to work on. Delaware had too many big runs. Need to get that cleaned up as we advance to the conference slate but there is no reason we can't fix it and keep the winning coming.

it's because if your an old geezer like me. ru has a way of snagging defeat from the thrill of victory....even during schiano 1.0 this would happen, only less frequently.......it's a terrible way to behave as a fan....i also agree this has to change....learning how to to win is the first step....we see this happening now with our olympic programs....i only hope i'm here to witness it.....

Thank you for understanding my point. Both women's soccer and field hockey beat ranked opponents today. This didn't happen over night. The mindset all changed.

Here is a bigger problem that no one is talking about that Rutgers is going to face now.
They have not gone up against a good QB.
Temple, Cuse and Delaware QBs did not have good games against Rutgers.
That all changes starting next week.

McNamara hasn't exactly lit it up this year; he hasn't had to yet, either. I will say Vedral had a career game against UM last year so this should get interesting...

Nice Monday morning QBing, OP.

How long have you been a Rutgers fan? Schiano 1.0 had inexplicable losses.. even after 2006. I love the guy and what he has done here.. but to not consider the possibility of a letdown to a team that just played in the FCS championship? That would be the crazy position.
They didn’t play in the FCS championship though. They were dismantled by So Dakota State in the semifinal round.

Anything can happen. Always respect your opponents. Having said that a few posters on this board were whiny about it over the summer and there was no need for that. I think the OP is talking about the vocal minority who said we were dumb to schedule Delaware. That’s just silly.

They are a great team at their level. I’ll root for them the rest of this year and usually do.

I don’t think the confidence level of fans on a message board has any effect on the potential outcome of the actual game
One could consider it a leading indicator for the team's psyche- but seems tenuous at best.

The fanbase takes on the personality of your team based solely on results….it’s been that way for a hundred years and always will be.
We could all turn into Rutgers Al this week and place Michigan on upset alert, unfortunately it won’t make one bit of difference

I literally hate the smug-ness of some Rutgers fans. Why don't you want a winner? Alright Eeyore.

lol.

Here is the good news: I am not a Rutgers fan.

And now the bad news: "soon" as far as a NC for Rutgers is very likely less close than an NFL championship is for the Detroit Lions. Also, being a realist wrt sports is not being "smug".

There is nothing wrong with being a positive fan and pulling for small day to day improvements, even when the team loses. I think that actually helps the program by attracting more fans and re-enforcing those that already exist. But predicting "championships soon!" is just being divorced from reality.

Great response, truly. But I never specified a sport. Rutgers has several nationally ranked programs for the first time in a long time. Once the first Natty comes, the rest will follow.

These types of games are usually lost by the FBS team with careless mistakes.

We quite literally played a perfect game in that respect. Besides no turnovers, the 2 penalties against RU were blatantly wrong (or at least nobody could say RU made a mistake leading to either call - there was no way for Toure to avoid the hit on the QB and you couldn’t even identify incidental early contact on the PI call replay).

Everyone just needs to F O C U S
Everyone in the stadium an hour before kickoff, so we can focus. Those at home have the channel locked in, snacks already layed out, dog already walked, so we can all focus. If we win, everyone must wear the exact same outfit, unwashed. Same pencil must be placed in the same spot on the table. You know the drill.

Oh, I don't know...

Sitting through every down of a Terry Shea regime.
BuffaNova.
A bad night in Cincinnati derailing a major bowl bid for a good team (Morgantown wouldn't have mattered)
Wandering the main street of Lawrence Kansas late on a hot afternoon muttering to myself "How did we get back here again?"
The list goes on and on.

I am convinced we are on the right trajectory but even if we start winning all the time but I don't know that I will live long enough to develop OSU or Alabama fan levels of taking winning for granted.

It is amazing, although fully understandable, how this fan base goes from optimism to pessimism on a daily basis. The ones who are optimistic try and get the others to join them. The pessimists can’t understand the optimism. but the strange thing is it is not always consistent from week to week. Some posters are up one week and down the next. I know I am. We play well some go up. Others see a flaw in the game and go down. We are an amazing group. Some psychologist should write a book about us. And then there are trolls. Why does anyone need to troll a group that tends to troll itself. Gotta love it.
