Why Was IU a 5 Seed?

I know this question has been discussed, but I just felt like giving it its own thread before putting it to bed for good.

Because I just re-reviewed their schedule and, you know, minus that early Hawaii trip before they found themselves, it is REALLY impressive. This is a team that won the Big 10 Championship (going 15-3 in conference) by a full two game margin over the rest of a field that included Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue and Iowa. They're 27-7 overall. With wins over the likes of Notre Dame, Maryland, Wisconsin, Iowa (twice) and Purdue (and now UK), and their only conference losses were on an overtime last second shot at Wisconsin, at Michigan State, and one admittedly bad loss at PSU. And their conf tourney loss was also on a last second buzzer beater.

If someone showed me their blind resume and told me to guess the seed, I'd guess no lower than a 3 seed. Instead, the committee gave them a 5. WTF? Well, good golly, that's about the best damn 5 seed I've ever seen.

And wouldn't you know they'd be paired with us. Meanwhile, the 5 seed paired with Duke was a 12 loss Baylor team that finished 5th in its conference.

They were a 5 seed because they lost in the first round of their conference tournament. The selection committee puts a lot of emphasis on the conference tourneys. That's why we got a 4 seed for winning our conference tourney, and the team we beat got a 3. Oh wait, nevermind.

According to the seed list I think they were the top 5 seed. I had them bottom 3 seed.

Probably should have been a 4 but honestly.....if the difference is one seed line I really can't complain. These teams are so close you could have made a case for a 3,4 or 5.

The NCAA hates Cal. To IU UK is a big game. Not so much the other way. Game was made for TV. Get used to taking the shaft from the NCAA. Unless we have a super team like 2012 it will be hard to get titles. Duke on the other hand plays UNC-W and Yale. Ah screw it, we will be good next year.

I wished some of our rah rah posters had more humility. We have not won a title for 4 years now so stop acting like we are UCLA 1969.

When was the last time two power conference champions played each other in the 2nd round of the NCAAT? Both teams were seeded wrong.

1. IU was clearly superior to Duke's resume and could/should have 4 and bump to Duke to 5. (Blasphemy to NCAA but true).
2. Texas AM was a joke over UK.
3. Utah was a joke over UK
4. I'll call Miami a joke over UK
5. Cal being a 4 over IU was silly as well
6. I've not watched Xavier and Nova all year as I don't watch mid major conferences....but i'll bet those two aren't worth 2 and 3 seed as well out of awful Big East.

We can go down the list but to win the Big 10 and get a 5 seed and be best team in SEC and get a 4 seed are goofy notions.

This is the bottom line. All my years watching college basketball and I've never seen an outright Big 10 champion get seeded so low. This was the first time ever and, surprise surprise, guess who they paired em with? Apparently winning a Power 5 conference championship doesn't mean much these days.

The committee had to get 5 of those sweet Big 12 teams in before Indy.
Also the magnificent seasons Cal & Utah had in the amazing Pac 12, warranted top 4 seeds.

The committee did not watch many games. They looked at flawed rating indexes and used their own biases, such as allowing Tulsa to get in, placing Duke & OU in the easiest regions, & trying to make attractive TV match ups at the expense of fair seeding.

The Committee had to make sure that no good teams were in Duke's bracket.

imo they totally need to take the human element out of the placement of teams for matchup or tv benefit. In today's information age never should 10 random 60 year old AD's from around the country decide who is good and who isn't and on top of that let their bias and influence decide where people play. In a ideal bracket matrix take all ratings services and average all of them together. At that point get all automatic entries and on the ranking systems take the remaining teams to fill out the 68 team field. Strip the names off the 68 team field and do a live show revealing the teams from top to bottom and then let the committee place them as close to home as possible but removing all human bias.
