Why The Obsession With What Jerry Palm Thinks

Is Jerry Palm on the selection committee? If so, I can understand why there is a concern about what he thinks. If not, who cares what he thinks. I saw he was ranked 83 in Bracketology forecasting behind some guy who had a couple hundred Twitter followers. Am I missing something?

We could give a rat’s *** what he thinks but the perception problem is CBS uses him as their bracketologist, that spews that garbage he says about us to millions of casual viewers that know **** about college basketball and are just turning in to figure out their bracket. Get it now.

I think it's that he has a national forum on CBS and some think his position might influence what the actual committee might think or do. Meaning, hold the road record against us not because a committee member knows anything about our team, but they heard somewhere, from someone, that we had a less than stellar road record.

CBS reaches alot of the country. Its a perception issue. Palm is the 2nd biggest voice in the country. Sure he isnt on the committee and does not have influence on it but he has influence on that perception of Rutgers across the country so that is why it matters what he thinks. Not a good thing having someone with such a mouthpiece trashing Rutgers and its road record everyday

Mainly because he's prominent and using a stat that is pretty subjective and isn't putting everything in context while also assuming that causation = correlation. In the end, what he says doesn't matter but it does create a certain public perception.

Someone who hasn't watched the Big Ten at all this year sees what he says and mentions the road record, but has no idea that those losses were all against ranked top 25 teams and were almost all by single digits.

RPI was the end all, be all for all things March Madness and Palm was the guy for all things bracketology at one time when the internet became a thing in the 90s. Yes they included last 10, road record and things like that, but I'm glad they are using NET and multiple metrics now. It shows how flawed RPI is and was. Teams goes though peaks and valleys, we had our valley now we are back on the upswing of a peak again, past years our RPI, winning too many home games, 4-6 last 10, and 2-10 R/N record would have us out, but multiple metrics say we have been a solid team all year and a quality at large team. Palm has to get with the times getting the right 68 is better than holding onto something that is no longer acceptable tool for it.

As some have already said it's due to his platform and ability to shape the narrative. Its not like the selection committee watched every Rutgers game. What if they only tuned into to a couple of our losses? Then see Palm's nonsense and start thinking we don't belong. After beating both Maryland and Purdue I don't think there is anyyyy chance we are out though so back to not caring what this fool thinks

The NCAA committee does an excellent job. I doubt they are swayed one little bit what a Jerry Palm would have to say or how Rutgers looked in the 1st half of a Penn State game. You are what your resume says you are and I think it is beyond obvious we will find our way in the top 30-40 at the end of the day.

If it makes you feel better all 100+ "bracketologists" on bracketmatrix have us in. The outliers are two (2) that have us as a "7" and two that have us as a "12". Blended average of all is Rutgers is "in" as the lowest "9 seed".

@bac2therac should get his predictions on this site!!!

Let's take our scarlet colored glasses off for a second and look at a different team. Curious to see if he's right about Texas Tech. He could be exposed here as well.

There is some truth to Texas Tech but i would not have them out..he is too extreme and its based solely on that 10-13 mark vs q123.

Jerry Palm is a very odd thinking person.
