Why the hate for laviano ?

I think people prefer an unknown entity over a known entity (assuming they are not Jared Goff, etc.). In the right circumstances, I think Laviano can be an average B10 QB. I would take that in a heartbeat. However, if Allen or Rescigno won the job then everyone is left to wonder just how good they can become.

I won't admit to it Lusc, because I don't think it's true.
IMO, Flood handled the entire situation so poorly the net result was what appeared to be the booing of CL.
I blame the entire incident on Flood.
TGHG

it wasn't you, but there were many fans on here with that mentality. Denying it is plainly just inaccurate at best.

So do I, a lot of the "hatred" for Nova was due to Akron State and the Virginia tech bowl game. Flood did a very poor job of protecting his qbs.

Zapp, it's a generational thing. Hate has almost become synonymous with disagree. My kids (in their 20's) will say things like "why are you hating on the IPA" if I choose to drink a lager instead while they all have an IPA in their hands.

I'm with you GOOD LUCK CL and GO RU!

This. Its just slang.

"I'm hating on x" isnt as serious as "I hate x"

"There is Laviano hate" is less serious than "there is hatred for Laviano".

Op is trying to pinpoint where the negativity is coming from.. he's not accusing ppl of actually detesting the kid.

Can not be more wrong. Most if not all was Flood ill will. No hating on Laviano despite his ill conceived gesture.

All the denials in the world won't change the fact the crowd reaction was directed at Laviano. 9 months later and you are still trying to justify the unjustifiable. It was as low a point as I can remember following RU football.

Ill conceived gesture? If anything it wasn't strong enough.

They were booing Flood not Laviano. All your denials dont make it right. It was silly and bet he regrets it. Part of maturation process. As far as a low a point as you can remember following RU football? In the words of John McEnroe, "Are you kidding me?"

In fan behavior? Yes.

Booing Flood is the biggest bunch of BS that's ever been floated around here. Get a tape of the BTN broadcast and listen to what they said.

Funny that you expect Laviano to be more mature than the grown ups in the stands. I really hope he doesn't regret a second of it. It was well deserved.

Much aboo about nothing. Was totally directed at Flood. Poor Retig but ignore that part of the equation.

Ok you keep trying to convince yourself of that.

Poor Rettig? No one is guaranteed playing time. Apparently these kids know this better than you adults. It's not rec soccer.

Folks are saying not to boo the coaches because the kids can't tell who the booing is directed towards.

Yet you have the ability to tell us for a fact who the boos were directed towards..?

Just silly trying to make this a booing thread. No real hating.

As one of the few hundred or so RU fans at the Nebraska away game, he made some really nice reads and runs against a decent team in a hostile environment on a hot day. Hopefully similar response to Offense we will run now.

Flood was so out of touch and ignorant, he should have never allowed the incident to take place.
I've seen managers in the big leagues leave pitchers in the game to not subject them and their families to the boos that would have occurred had they made a pitching change.
Leave Rettig in the game to finish the series you dummy!

People really need to chill out about booing. I understand that these are college kids, but even Mike Teel said that it is a part of the game. FTR, I was not at the game, but Flood's decision to put him in was a boo deserving one.

When they stop booing and just don't care anymore to the point they stop showing up, that is when we will have real problems. I personally don't engage in booing at college games, but if they paid for a ticket they have a right to boo, the kids need to develop thicker skins, that's life.

It is not HATE it is bigotry yes a strong word to put the mirror our the face
* 4 star California Rettig from famed LSU vs a 2star upstate NY kid with 1 D1 school offer people made up their minds before they even saw them play a game and still maintain a bigoted attitude that the press and rating system is a truth.
Savon Huggins is an example of failed rating system
1} I took it to heart when it was thrown around that Cl could not throw the long ball it is still being touted today but it is a LIE. So to determine for myself as I always do I watch all the warm ups. Both Rettig and CL stand at the 40 drop to the 45 and throw into the end zone. CL for what ever reason throws a few rope balls on target 40+ yards then he starts dropping eggs into the basket accurately Rettig throws rockets yes faster and harder but he is inconsistent! watch the game people you will see that those few ledger liar on this board as still slinging dissention
2} on downing the ball on 4 down was the coaches fault but as I was there I saw what CL say I looked at the down marker just about the same time CL did IT SHOW 3rd down He comes under center and just as he puts his hand under center the line-marker changes it to 4th down Not CL fault. The coach should have signaled a play in anyway.
3} the ledger liars and trolls on this board want to have dissention in all things around our program When ash was hired they started with the crap that Ash can not recruit and they still say CL can not throw the long ball

Most of you are from Jersey how is it you get sucker so easily by these posters over and over all these years.
Let go of your bigoted view maybe CL was a 2 star out of HS he is beyond that now, KIDS grow up some get better some do not CL is getting better
CL is a leader and a fighter who earned the starting JOB
Just on experience alone CL has improved. The fact that he beat Allen a spread player speak about he is learning and improving. Go look at Nova first year did he not throw a ball at this own foot! yes we laugh now and he matured and got better so will CL
And all the 4 star players behind him only are yesterday news they are all 1 stars once they step on the field (PS the last 4 star QB we got from LSU ended up not even play QB)
Both Flood and Ash have one thing in common they put the best player in first to win the game because they lost they get fired

Boos are hand grenades, not sniper rifles. You throw it out there and everyone close to the area takes the impact - just because it was meant for Person A doesn't mean Person B doesn't also feel it.

Don't forget sighs and moans turn into boos.
Even the best intending fans let out those two vocal sounds.
Watching the head coach use time outs like a madman, let time run off the clock, punt from the opponents 40, call 2 yard pass plays on 3rd and 10, and put his team in the worst possible down and distance scenarios will elicit those gutteral sounds.

IMO it's just as likely that those boos were saying, "The kid isn't playing particularly well and is now obviously hurt -- what on Earth will it take to make a QB change?"

I'm not going to belabor this point; we're just going to have to disagree.

Nightfan 7 would have probably been smart enough to read the situation and protect his starting QB and family from boos.
In touch coaches know about crowd behavior. and mentality.
Good coaches in touch with the moment will not put a kid in an obvious position to be booed.
You'll say it's not the coaches job to monitor *** hole fans....umm yes it is!
There are times where it's out of your control and there's nothing as a coach you can do to prevent it...this was not one of those times. Only an imbecile would not have allowed Rettig to finish a series.

Except your theory falls apart because he was 21/33, 344 yards and 4 TDs in the game. The kid was playing lights out, and you play the hot hand.

Shift: that's even more reason to believe the fans were booing the coach, isn't it? I mean why boo a kid who is playing his heart out? It makes no sense to me. IMO, it only makes sense to attribute the boos as being directed to the coach.

And by not playing well, I'll admit I forgot he was good in that game, but the sentiment was really set during the course of the season -- people were "ready" for a change and were waiting for any legit reason for the coach to make one, injury being a compelling one. Context is important.

Again, I'm not interested in continuing the back and forth. People are passionate about their positions and I respect that. I've made my argument and if you still disagree, that's perfectly fine.

I know he stunk last year, but the whole team stunk . The Maryland and Twitter thing please get over people . The Michigan state fourth down spike was one of the worst plays by anyone in Rutgers history , I get it . He will probably be best remembered for that in Rutgers and BIG infamy .
But ash is going to pick the best qb for this team and that guy is laviano . Hope for the guy to play well and Rutgers wins games .
-----
The title of your post is offensive..... It assumes that there is mass hatred for Laviano, and now you want fans to explain themselves

What you could have done is titled it "for those supporting a different starting quarterback, state your reasoning"

Again, your way is no way to go.

Just to keep score, Zapaa and Knightfan7/Knight Shift believe fans booed Laviano. I believe fans booed Flood. Zapaa gives part of the blame to Flood for creating a situation ripe for a-hole behavior. I tend to give more credit to the fans and refuse to believe that 30K Rutgers fans can be so classless as to boo an injured kid.

Lets DEBUNK another of the clown brigade's excuses, that it is all anger at Flood and how he "handled the situation"

Really that translates to we hate Flood "because he didn't start Rettig, and we blame Laviano b/c Rettig was not a superstar savior"

The whole Laviano struggling/Flood mishandling is all Crap. I know this because in the spring game where Laviano outperformed Rettig AND in game one where he moved the O much better, all you people were out here complaining about Lavianos TD PASSES. Saying they would have been picked in a diff game etc etc. You hated CL from the start, b/c you had it in your heads that Rettig was gong to be a world beater. Why can not one of you admit it?

it was 95% Flood hatred...get it correct.

The crowd booed loudly in 95 when Ray Lucas trotted on to start the Cuse game after Rob Higgins lit up Penn State the week before. Higgins replaced an injured Lucas to throw for 285 and 3td in 3 quarters. Was the crowd booing Lucas or the decision to choose him?

He's won the starting job from transfers who were both former HS 4* recruits two years in a row.
If they had lived up to their high school rating they would not have transferred or be moved to wr at their former schools. Collecting other school rejects is now how build talent at the position. It not Ash's fault he was left with little talent at the position. It also tough because qb position takes time to develop and few freshmen are ready to play

Agree there was no reason not to let Rettig finish the series. Also think he deserved other shots to play. Flood was stubborn that way.

On the flip side or moronic fans always cling to the backup QB being the savior and all of our coaches have screwed up all of our backup QB's by not playing them more. I don't want Ash to play who the fans want. I know you don't either Zap.

It is obvious to me that the Laviano haters are also the Flood haters. Not all Flood haters hate CL but the overwhelming majority of CL haters also seem to have hated KF. They saw Rettig as the answer. Clearly he is not. This is the third coaching staff that has opted to not use him. He is not even number two and Gio may be number three. As bad as Flood was he was apparently right about Rettig. Right now it is Laviano's team and his job to keep. I hope he is successful enough to keep it.

I'm interested in your opinion of when a bad coach is left with much talent at the position, and then ruins them?

LoL had to do it. But, in all honesty, I am interested to see what CL does under a better staff. His numbers were decent last year to say the least.

In 2009, Dom Natale started our home opener.

It wasn't pretty.

The rest of that year was Tom Savage's coming out party.

Going into camp, I suspect the staff already knew Tom was the "better" QB, but Schiano decided to start Dom anyway.

If Tom was indeed vastly superior to Dom (which he was), then that's precedence to believe that 1.) it's the coach's job protect his QBs, 2.) that doesn't necessarily mean the best QB always plays, contrary to coach-speak, 3.) fans aren't always misguided in their belief that the better QB is on the bench, and 4.) the Rutgers coaching staff didn't always get it wrong in handling the QB situation, even if immediate results weren't positive.
