I know he stunk last year, but the whole team stunk . The Maryland and Twitter thing please get over people . The Michigan state fourth down spike was one of the worst plays by anyone in Rutgers history , I get it . He will probably be best remembered for that in Rutgers and BIG infamy .
But ash is going to pick the best qb for this team and that guy is laviano . Hope for the guy to play well and Rutgers wins games .

He's won the starting job from transfers who were both former HS 4* recruits two years in a row. At least the kid has some fight in him and doesn't quit. Also, his stats were not too bad for a first year starter. His worst games were games where we were clearly over-matched. (It was the 6 guys that got arrested that doomed our season last year, not CL.) I didn't like his immature reaction after the incident in the Maryland game, but I was also pi$$ed off at the classless segment of our fans who booed him after he came back on the field after an injury. (It was the defense that lost that game for us, not the offense.) I am hoping he makes a big leap in performance this year, because we are going to need it!

I'm willing to give Laviano the benefit of the doubt, and hope that he has significantly progressed from last season. I'm more forgiving than others, and I can't blame anyone for being disappointed, and expressing that disappointment. We saw Laviano perform all last year so we've got a decent sample size to form an opinion.

For you this is a positive thread. LOL.

I think many overplay the 4th down spike. No way we get a meaningful play off in that spot. The bad play was taking the sack on 3rd but if he tried to throw it away he risked a grounding penalty, a fumble or an INT. He was in a bad position on 3rd down because we needed a big play and he had a BIG DL in his face almost immediately. On 4th we had a shot for the Hail Mary but only had 3 WR's in the game.

I think we all need a wait and see attitude and show support for the new coaching staff. I trust our coaches would pull CL if not doing the job. It's a new system for everyone to learn. I'm sure this will make Zach Allen work a little harder now.

Good summary.

People seem to ignore the fact the crowd was booing a QB who was 21-33, 344yds, and 4 TD's to 4 different receivers. Who in their right mind wouldn't take that every Saturday?

I guess I missed the part where Laviano was responsible for Maryland's 400+ rushing yards

Totally Laviano's fault. By throwing so many TDs, he did not give the defense adequate time to rest. Surprised you missed this.

I'm scratching my head here, but so far I can't remember a starting quarterback this board didn't hate, at least since Ryan Hart. People hated Teel (until he was gone). People hated Nova (until he was gone). Maybe Savage people didn't hate, at first at least.

Looking back, I didn't like Laviano by proxy of Flood. I hated Flood when he refused to change it up when Laviano struggled. He earned his role, now it's time to support him.

^^Basically this for me.^^

Inexperienced Laviano in a pro set with the Princeton librarian coaching = no bueno.

Laviano with some experience in a spread with better coaching and a reasonable leash = Likely best of a difficult QB situation.

Peoples anger for laviano is mostly anger at flood who did not handle the qb situation well last year both on the field and how he communicated his decisions to the media.

Because people have a love fest for another QB on the roster and everyone thinks he is better than Laviano. (even though 2 coaches now do not think this).

To address the OP as to why the hate, I think it falls into two categories. Some just feel that he isn't any good plus his behavior at the end of the Maryland game adds to it and it annoys them that he has won the job two years in a row. The others hate him simply because they hated Flood and Laviano was Flood's guy so they hate him as an extension of their hatred of Flood. Personally, I just want him to have the best year of his life.

You also missed the 5 game stretch leading into Maryland where #findanotherteam threw for a total of 515 yards, 0 TDs & 5 picks.

Personally I blame Flood & am willing to give Laviano the benefit of the doubt. But if he struggles & isn't pulled for the next man up, the honeymoon is over with this staff.

It's really quite simple. We have one of the most fickle fan bases out there and has been illustrated over and over again one of the dumbest. We have more self proclaimed mavens on here than there are coaches in the Hall of Fame (college and NFL combined). But the entertainment factor is simply too good to ignore.

I personally don't know anyone who hated any of our QBs. People disagreed with how long the staff would stick with Teel and/or Nova. They could literally throw 5 picks and stay in the game.

And people love Teel and Nova because they also provided us with some of the highest highs as Rutgers Football fans.

Nobody hates Laviano and Kyle Flood handled the QB situation so well in his tenure. Dont need to be a Hall of Fame coach to not pull your QB and take a breather say in the PSU, Kent State and Va Tech games or to not spike the ball on 4th down or to pull your Qb when he got his bell rung. Its really not rocket science.

I'm talking about the Maryland game and what was going AT THAT MOMENT. He was having the best game of his short career. Saying well he sucked for weeks before wasn't then and isn't now any justification.

Something everyone seems to forget is if I'm correct a win would have likely made RU one of the three 5-7 teams to play in a bowl. Now, that may not mean anything to most fans but I bet it would be important to the school, coaches, and players.

I think people would be more excited if we had a guy at quarterback who had more upside. Laviano doesn't really have the tools to be a weapon as a passer or a runner; so the best case scenario with him is to be a competent game manager. Which really isn't a bad thing, but that doesn't galvanize the fans.

Because everybody wants Cam Newton to be our quarterback and instead we have Laviano. I don't think the "hatred" (exaggerated term, in my opinion) really exists. Just idealism mostly for what we wish we could find.

I understand the excitement about something new. I really wish it were true too.

For better or worse two staffs now have come to the same conclusion. All the bitching in the world isn't going to change that. It's time for all those who consider themselves supporters of the program stop the nonsense and do just that, give their support 100%.

And also his suspension for the 1st half of the season opener for violating curfew and getting caught trying to use a fake ID.

Basically the hate ( dislike better word and thank Zappa for pointing out hate is thrown around a little too much) was because Flood refused to change QBs when Chris was showing nothing and the dislike RU fans had for Kyle.
Many armchair QB coaches felt Laviano's arm lacked the strength to throw the long ball.
Having a 4 star transfer available made Flood's decision to make Laviano the starter after Rettig had a good half against FCS Norfolk St made many RU fans feel Hayden deserved the starting role and nitpicked Laviano's play every chance they got and they had plenty of opportunity to do so.

But the fact is Kyle Flood was disliked and Chris suffered from the hate directed towards Kyle and the way Flood refused to pull him when it was obvious Laviano was struggling.
The fact is, now, Chris earned the starting role in 2016 because the same competition he had in 2015 didn't step up and prove they deserve to be named the starter against Washington.
Maybe that's why the same players didn't become starters under Flood and it's possible , as bad as Chris looked at times, Laviano's competition in the 2015 season might have had too many holes in their game to be reliable starters.
That could be the same reason all of them and the TCU transfer don't deserve the starting nod in 2016 and why Ash picked Chris.

Zapp, it's a generational thing. Hate has almost become synonymous with disagree. My kids (in their 20's) will say things like "why are you hating on the IPA" if I choose to drink a lager instead while they all have an IPA in their hands.

I'm with you GOOD LUCK CL and GO RU!

loved Mike Teel punching his teammate and I love Laviano for giving it to the "fans". Nobody wants to see a guy get a little angry these days. Gotta hold it in, gotta keep it together.. (that is, until it becomes too much and people snap)

I want my college QB to be a college QB - not a professional. Our college students should be learning how to be individuals and take advantage of the freedoms afforded to them, not learning how to be drones who say and do the right thing all the time.

Anyway, Laviano for president as far as Im concerned. Go get em

Lets DEBUNK another of the clown brigade's excuses, that it is all anger at Flood and how he "handled the situation"

Really that translates to we hate Flood "because he didn't start Rettig, and we blame Laviano b/c Rettig was not a superstar savior"

The whole Laviano struggling/Flood mishandling is all Crap. I know this because in the spring game where Laviano outperformed Rettig AND in game one where he moved the O much better, all you people were out here complaining about Lavianos TD PASSES. Saying they would have been picked in a diff game etc etc. You hated CL from the start, b/c you had it in your heads that Rettig was gong to be a world beater. Why can not one of you admit it?

I won't admit to it Lusc, because I don't think it's true.
IMO, Flood handled the entire situation so poorly the net result was what appeared to be the booing of CL.
I blame the entire incident on Flood.
