We're just talking about registering for the draft, which doesn't exist as of now, but it gets to a larger question of, should everybody have to give a year of national service, be it to the military or something else? I think some countries do this, maybe Israel or Switzerland.
I could get behind this in principle, but making things like this mandatory infringes on our freedoms, does it not?
Force people to do those things? But you are against health care assistance? Hmm.....and you all talk about this "big government"......what the Hell would you call this form of government where you are TOLD your options to do at the age of 18??????
Have I said I was against health care assistance or against the ACA? Those are 2 very different things.
And spare me the outrage. What does being 18 have to do with it? Heaven forbid people have some kind of stake in the game.
I would fully support your proposal if the service was voluntary but part of the benefits were the items you issued ... namely elective credits in college.
I have two engineering degrees ... but still "had" to take elective courses in things such as The History of Jazz, Music Appreciation, Leisure Time and Human Behavior, Spanish, etc. Pointless **** I had no interest in, but they fit around my engineering schedule and checked the appropriate boxes.
It's already mandatory to register. It's already mandatory to go to school. Besides, most 18 year olds are the maturity equivalent of 15 year olds from 20 years ago.
It is mandatory to register, but it isn't mandatory to go to school beyond a certain point ... there are lot's of drop-outs and they aren't prosecuted. And it's definitely not mandatory to go beyond 18. A draft would be used in a time of crisis, and in those instances the normal rules don't apply, but the rest of the time I don't think it goes along with our freedoms ... life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, etc. to have things be mandatory like that.
How bout heavily incentivizing it and removing the mandatory requirement? The school thing would be one, how about no eligibility for Gov't aid with out having participated? I don't have this solved, it's an idea to spark conversation. I'm sure it could be worked out with input from multiple viewpoints.
Yeah, absolutely, that's what I was getting at. Even if you don't get elective credits, maybe you get reduced tuition or qualify for 0% student loans. The government aid part ... I'm always hesitant with this because of people with kids. However, for an able bodied adult with no kids, absolutely. I would extend it though. If you didn't do the service before, and you want government assistance, then you have to do the service now, while you're getting it.
