Self made a bad pitch and the guy crushed it. It is what it is. He had thrown 1.2 scoreless innings before that and battled back to get the next two guys (including their best hitter, a lefty) after the leadoff walk. I can see why we would think he was about to get out of the inning.

I thought tonight would be the toughest game to win just because Campbell is outstanding. Still like our chances the next two days. They don’t have a ton of pitching depth and we saw both of their best two arms tonight.

I could see Gilbert going in at 3rd from an offensive standpoint, but why did we pinch hit Cumbest instead of Gilbert batting after a 2 HR weekend at the plate?

There actually should be times in Game #1 of SEC series where 3 runs are enough to win. When teams have their aces going runs are at a premium. So absolutely I would put more of the loss last night on the pitching and defense. Looked to me like we were just trying to save the best of our bullpen for games 2 and 3 and were basically surrendering the game last night. That was exactly what happened. If Self pitches more than one inning there is a high probability he will get tagged.
