Why is it so difficult for Mark Pope to recruit?

B+ recruiter my ***. The ONLY reason he got Moreno and Johnson here were because they happen to be from KY. Pope is a C- recruiter and that won’t remotely cut it here.

Absolutely no one on here knows what a recruiting visit or discussion with Pope is like, so just a lot of BS being thrown around.

At the end of the day it’s about money for 99.9% of these guys. That’s what recruiting is now. Get paid.

That’s just not true. You act like one school is offering 2 mil and the other is offering 250k. It’s more like One is offering 1.85 and the other 2. Some guys that 150k can be the difference but for the NBA guys, 150k isn’t enough to justify risking their futures. Money matters but it’s not even close to everything.

Everyone is offering money. You still have to play the ole wine and dine courting game to convince these guys to come here.

Have to sell a vision and a development plan.

As you well-stated, there’s plenty of places to make relatively similar great money. It’s the sell of a confident, accomplished staff that can develop a 19-22 year old player to the next level that wins competitive recruitments.

There is no way to know how this turns out till the portal closes. If Pope signs Stokes and 2-3 of the other top kids he is targeting in the portal, there will be a lot of excitement going into next season. If he lays an egg, then he will be under even more heat than he already is. What is making this worse for him, is that people are comparing his recruiting to Cal's. I have seen folks on here saying they wanted Mikka Muurinen and Dedan Thomas "only if they were coming off the bench", which is code for troll or stupid. Cal may be the best recruiter of all time, even at UK, no other coach landed big time recruits like he did, not even Rick. Landing Stokes and say, Muurinen and Diallo and some depth pieces would constitute a MONSTER class for anyone. He still has time but he better get on the stick, or he is setting himself up for a miserable season before he is terminated

Comparing him to Cal without even realizing it? Absolutely. Said it many times myself. If Pope is compared to anyone other than Cal or Scheyer his recruiting has been more than fine.
