Why is everyone so hard on Riley?

Guys, I was a 20 year Oregon State booster and have know Mike for many years. He is a great man and a great coach and I would follow him to the ends of the earth. But come on, his peak years at OSU he won 9 games. He is a good coach who will pull the occasional upset but other wise win roughly 7 games a year and once in a while 9-10 games. Don't be angry about it. He simply took the job he was offered. I'm tired of all the Riley bashing around here....be great full for what you have and support him as we did at OSU!

I don't think anyone will argue that Coach Riley is a class act, a good man, etc...Let's just say we're used to a little better than the occasional 9-10 games...

Okay then why did you hire Mike? You cannot complain when this was the choice of the current administration.

I don't think the fans hired him. I could be mistaken though. Your anger should be projected to Riley and the administration for putting him in a no win situation.

I'm sure he's a good man and knows a lot about the game of football. But it's rare for a program with our resources and tradition to hire someone who's career was trending downward. The hire would have made sense in 2008.

You won't see Alabama or Ohio State hire a guy who had 3 losing seasons in his last 5 years.

I'm not angry at all! I thought we had a GREAT season. 9 wins for Riley is like I said, a peak year. Those of you that continually bash him on here though simply are getting what you asked for.

How exactly did people who bash him get what they asked for?

This coaching hire was a surprise and a disappointing one at that so I fail to see how anyone asked for it.

What does Bo or Osborne have to do with this discussion?
What? They have everything to do with it. Everyone used to hang nuts on that 9 win number. Bo's whole staff (hired by Pope Tom) constantly bragged about getting to 9. Nice try.

But in Riley's defense hasn't Nebraska been through this "excitement" before? BC maybe? Just asking...

ElRoberson appears your a Mike Riley fan and not necessarily a Nebraska fan.

No one wanted the job so they gave it to Riley. That's why you don't have coaches like Saban or Urban and never will because nothing is good enough for you Nebraska fans. But good luck chasing the 90's though.

I don't care about what Bo or his staff thought was acceptable. 9 wins under Osborne was not 9 wins in this day and age.

I find it interesting that during a time when some highly sought after recruits are making their decision between NU and other schools that there are a bunch of "Newbies" posing as Husker fans bashing our program and our head coach. Be smarter than to feed them Husker fans.

I'd say money talks and ******** walks is more likely the case.

We won't know because our AD was locked on to Mike Riley. But I have a hard time believing a guy like Tom Herman would have chosen Houston over Nebraska, but who knows.

Herman got fired as the Iowa St OC before he latched on at OSU.....let that sink in. Herman did not have the resume to be the Husker head coach when he took the Houston job. No way.

Not true. Iowa State's offense improved dramatically under Herman from 2009-2011. Urban saw that and hired him away. I would trust Urban Meyer's gauge for coaching talent over most athletic directors.

Too early to judge Mike R. give him another 2 years to get his recruits in, and establish an offense with a QB that fits his vision.

2018 he will be lucky to win more than 8 games. If year four is the year we finally can judge Riley and his crew....ouch. I think it's pretty clear this group will never be a championship level staff. Hell, at this point I wouldn't even feel confident saying they will win the division during their time here. My hope is they kick *** on the recruiting trail and upgrade the talent level for the next staff.
