Why does Lee have a problem throwing over the middle?

he seems tall enough to see over the linemen, so why can't he see the defenders?
will the interceptions go down with experince? or is it going to be a continual thing?

Perhaps there's more to it, but to me it seems like Lee is trying to put passes through windows that are way too tight for his arm.

Lee was the same way at Tulane. The 2 years at there he had nearly the same amount of touchdown passes as interceptions. Overall he had 21 interceptions. Not sure he will be correcting that any time soon.

It's because the other team cheats and puts a defender there. He is used to throwing against our defence in practice where they stay out of the area.

The scheme and/or receivers may not be helping him. It just seems other college teams (like Rutgers) routinely have receivers wide open. It seems every ball Lee throws has to be in a one-foot window and it catches up with him in the INT column. Either the scheme is lacking, the receivers can't get separation, or there are wide open receivers and he doesn't see them. When I was watching Rosen sling it last night for UCLA it occurred to me so far this year I cannot recall once when Lee threw it out of bounds because of pressure or no one open.

I believe part of the problem is a by product with our issues with the offensive line. Tight ends and running backs are needed to stay in and block on passing plays. Consequently, there aren't as many receivers going out on passing routes which makes it easier for the opposing secondary to cover less players. The options Lee does have are limited and the coverage is better.

Efficiency. Turnovers usually end up in points by the other team. He has given up 28 points by passing.

Your team is better off when you have a QB with high TD's and low INT's. Regardless of the attempts.

That's what made our offense unstoppable in 1995. QB efficiency. 31 Total TDS. 4 INT's

To me, taking the snap from behind center is partly to blame. If a QB is operating out of the shotgun, it's a little easier to see what's going on, than having to turn your back, make a fake to the RB, spin around and then try to find everyone downfield.

He has no awareness. He constantly misses underneath routes that are wide open. He stares down receivers. He tries to fit the ball into tight windows when there's nothing there. Our receivers don't seem to be getting a ton of separation but Lee is average at best qb.

The defense does not know before the ball is snapped how many receivers are staying in to block.

I admit that I did not watch the first half this past Saturday and the other games have been sporadic for me. But, from what I have seen, I have to ask the following:

1. Where are out patterns to the sideline? The three step, five yard out, the five step, 15 yard out? etc. If thrown remotely on time, these are very hard to defend to the outside and tend to pull defenders from the middle of the field.

2. Where is the vaunted screen game we heard so much about? This will help slow down the pass rush

3. TA had the same problem with not seeing the underneath coverage. Coaches can talk about this all day but it is ability issue, either you have the ability to see it or you don't. When a QB turns in the pocket, he looks for color (his receiver) knowing approximately where they should be. He has a split second to make a decision if he is open or not, who is around him, over or under protection - either you have the ability to see it or you don't.

Tanner will continue to struggle with throwing over the middle. You drop middle LB's, keep safeties over the top and allow CB's to undercut and he will struggle, You have to make teams pay for playing like that, thus outside away from LB's and underneath with backs.

Someone on here, I believe, posted the performance of first year QBs under Riley's system. Frankly, it's not good. And it's consistently not good. However, historically their second year is significantly better.

I can't look up the history now but when I saw it, it was shockingly predictable.

When you're playing walk on WRs without great speed and they can't get separation....well. Your point about the #s in routes vs blocking and consequent coverage is spot on. I will also note though that Jameis Winston threw an interception to a safety he was looking right at with 2 other defenders flanking him across the middle yesterday with no pressure, a wide open passing lane and no reason to do it. The guy I think he was throwing it to screwed up his route after engaging the DB. When you're playing a bunch of young WRs, sometimes it's the WR doing the unexpected who screws the pooch.

My eyeballs say he throws the ball into coverage way too often - he did a little better job checking down vs. Rutgers but the accuracy was still suspect - he throws some good balls but throws alot of misses (normally too high). His decision making to go ahead and throw high risk passes is horrible. Needs to learn (if possible) to take the sack or throw it away - instead he takes big chances.

In listening to some experts - they are pointing to him not trusting the early read and holding the ball as the biggest problem. Sometime the coverage is there because he held the ball when the guy was open - and then he zings it in there when the receiver has run back into coverage or the D has re-acted because Lee stared down the receiver. He may not do that in practice but he sure as heck does it in games. It could get better - but I don't get why POB is not getting snaps even if it just to coach Lee on the sideline after his INT Pick6s (3.......friggin' 3 of them so far - let alone how many total INTs he has).

The players seem to respect and like him but if keeps loosing games singlehandedly that won't last long.

-3 scholarship WR played in our last game (all slot guys). Not having McQuitty & KJJ is hurting bad-especially when Stanley & Keyan Williams are out
