Because if you choose Duke you can reclassify over a year early, finish all high school classes AND be academically eligible to a top tier academic university in the matter of like 19 days.
Just ask Bags
Well, you’re wrong. Which isn’t exactly uncommon for you.
confirmed where?I mean, that's not how the Bolden recruitment went down. Mama wanted Duke and he was certainly persuaded to some extent. That's not all recruits, but yes, it's confirmed to have happened.
Academics. Something like, 'If your son doesn't make the NBA, he'll still be set with a 4-yr degree from Duke'...
One thing I have noticed when a kid picks Duke or is considering them you always here something along the lines of "the kid likes UK but the parents love Duke." Why? Surely these people can't believe the "set for life" crap from K. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
This right here
I did, the only thing close to what you're saying is in this article and it also has quotes from Bolden saying he made the decision for him and the relationship with the Duke coaching staff was the deciding factor.Google it. Literally, three words: Duke, Bolden, Mom.
Ha, ha, this made me laugh. He really does think the world is flat. Or at least that it's never been proven to be otherwise. Then I read today he loves Brad Stevens because he's an intellectual. I can't imagine what torture those "intellectual" conversations are for Stevens...It's that quality education they get. What a bunch of baloney. Take Kyrie Irving. He takes all freshman course, just like a freshman at Morehead would. English 101, American History, a math course, and some course of choice. Then he leaves to play basketball for a living, and when he wants to show off his Duke education, he tells everyone that the world is flat. Parents are idiots.
Much better school, so parents who care about that obviously lean that way. They will have their fair share of good pros in the league, especially after this year. Plus a smart thing he’s done is not be so overt about the one and done thing, and acts like the idea of a “student-athlete” isn’t bs anymore. That helps his image with a lot of people. One thing I have noticed when a kid picks Duke or is considering them you always here something along the lines of "the kid likes UK but the parents love Duke." They're selling a type of social status that UK can't.
I really believe that's the part of their pitch and "set for life" that cal hasn't figured out how to counter yet.
And there might not be a counter to it. I think he just has to hope when it's us or them it's the type of kid and family that won't go for that sort of thing.
The Patterson's come to mind. Obviously Knox and his dad. Quade Green. Didn't seem to work on Bamba either but I truly believe Texas did something dirty to get him.
K puts on a facade and cries to the kids in front of the parents. Probably even reads from the bible.
Cal tells them the truth straight up.
They paint themselves as the complete package.
According to them, Cal and Kentucky only care about the NBA, whereas Duke can produce the top pick in the draft AND give you one of the best educations in the world and the opportunity to be part of a network of successful alumni.
It's a small, private school that probably makes parents feel safer, and it's impossible to deny the media coverage, protection, hype, etc. that comes with wearing the Duke jersey. Factor in playing for the best coach in the history of college basketball and it's quite a sell job.
Their major victory was convincing kids the NBA preparation is equal or close to equal. Once K embraced one and done and had success with it, they were going to be hard to recruit against.
Especially with the good cop/bad cop routine of K and Capel. The Saint keeps his hands clean and his image wholesome, Capel does the dirty work and spreads the lies and rumors.
Not to mention, it's a bit of a status symbol/upper class badge of honor.
I go to the Hampton Inns does that count ?Ever visit the Hamptons? Ever visit there, mingle, and be told this lifestyle could be yours? That's Duke's basic pitch.
