Maybe they saw that Iowa State and Kansas had bird mascots for no apparent reason, and followed suit.

War Eagle is the rally cry. It started w/ a story from the 30's of someone who had an eagle, it flew around during the Auburn game then died at the end of the game.
That's the legend.

Did they win the game? Did they win a title that year? Just curious if there is something more to this.

You can find the origin of the War Eagle cry using a search engine called Google.

The legend is as legitimate as Auburn's last national championship. Some Civil War veteran brought an eagle to a football game, and it flew around the stadium, rallying the team to victory. Uh, yeah.

Eerily similar to Nebraska's battle cry: "Old fat farmer flying around the stadium in a crop dusting biplane!"
