Why Dan Mullen was the Yankee MSU needed

I got as far as "Mississippi State has a stellar list of former coaches."

Yep, and Darrell Royal is probably the ONLY MSU football coach I know of that has ever successfully used MSU as a stepping stone. All others before Mullen have been canned at some point. But modern day MSU is 10 times the football job that it has been in times past. Part of that is thanks to our current administration and football coach and part of that is due to a rising tide of money and notoriety of late from being an SEC member.

You can add Murray Warmath and Bernie Bierman. Warmath, by the way, coached Minnesota to the AP and coaches title in 1960-- another reason why Ole Miss fans don't like people who have coached at MSU...

Probably should have qualified my statement as no MSU coach SINCE Royal has used MSU as a stepping stone. I don't have a lot of knowledge about what coaches before Royal did after leaving MSU. I do know we screwed up by firing McKeen but I don't know that he ever had much success at another school after that happened.

The point is that MSU is a death trap for coaches, and we'd be so lucky to have had Dan come here and use us as a stepping stone.

I'm glad he hasn't left, but no one will convince me that at least half of Byrne's pitch to him wasn't "you can come here and raise your stock."

There is no way that someone as successful and confident as G Byrne pitched MSU as stepping stone program. It's self defeating. Byrne was anything but this. He was never a poor-little-MSU guy and I thought most of our fans had gotten rid of that attitude as well. Guess I was wrong.

What? Poor little MSU would have been like "Come to MSU where it's nearly impossible to get fired."

Byrne himself used MSU as a stepping stone, and that's a deal I'd take 10/10 times.
