Recruiting to Gainesville is a lot easier than Lexington. There is no guarantee of great success.
Most of Golden's success has been with 3 stars and transfers ranked 60-130 per 247 sports (WCJ ranked 69, Chinyelu ranked 104, and Martin ranked 129 as transfers; Haugh 3* ranked 192 and Condon 3* ranked 214). Other than Fland, who is just "okay" to me, I'm not seeing any 5*'s. Looks like he has a couple of decently rated 4* freshmen that I guess (?) are redshirting this season. Definitely not OAD U (unlike some I don't think you have to recruit all 5*'s to win big, but you have to recruit great based on the requirements of your system). He's either great at spotting overlooked diamonds in the rough, player development, or both. Sort of what I hoped Pope would be 🫤.

I show this as the buyout by year --$$$$. Its 75% of remaining salary.

After this year
$17,625,000
after 2027
$13,500,000
after 2028
9,187,500
after 2029
4,687,500
after 2030
$0
This is why Pope will never resign.

We gotta find some Mitch like sucker to hire Pope away, does the KSU or ASU AD have any learning disabilities??

Top PGs in no particular order below. I didn't add the ones I believe will be drafted in the top 20. Assume they enter portal and 2nd don't go pro. I stayed in the top 30 ranking on each category and the class next to their name is for this year only.

Scoring PG
JR - Josh Hubbard - Miss St
FR - Ebuka Ekorie - Stanford
JR - Tariq Francis - Rutgers
SO - Tyler Tanner - Vandy
SO - Terrence Hill Jr - VCU
SO - Labaron Philon - Bama
JR - Barrington Hargress - Colorado
JR - Aden Holloway - Bama
SO - John Mobley Jr - Ohio St

Pure PG
SO - Christian Anderson - Texas Tech
JR - Colby Garland - San Jose St
FR - Acaden Lewis - Villanova
SO - Joshua Dent - St Mary's
FR - Nigel James Jr - Marquette
If Christian Anderson came here…it would be on.

Danny Hurley was 16-17 in year 1, 19-12 in year 2. Now I don’t know if Pope can turn it around like Hurley did but at least there is precedent.
Stop. Let’s end this narrative.

Hurley was pre-NIL, pre-portal.

There is no comparison. Pope was given 22 million. Hurley inherited crap when transfers weren’t nearly as common as today.

^^^It’s been explained very well by multiple posters. They either know it’s a bad faith argument and make it anyway, or are too stupid to understand why it’s a terrible argument.

Why give him year 3? Because in his two years I’d argue he over-achieved in one and really under-achieved (so far) in the second one. If that’s all it takes to fire a coach, then you’ll have a hard time ever getting a top-tier coach to come here. If he under achieves next year, probably time for a move. But to declare it can’t work before year 2 is even over is simply ignorant.
