Who is the next coach who wants to win? Who is the next coach who will do whatever it takes to to beat the opponent without predijuce? Who?

Drew from Baylor
l think of the "available" coaches out there he would be the best fit. I'm just afraid that a program like IU will get to him before we do.
Baylor was just in the NIT 2 seasons ago. They have missed it 8 times since he's been there and they haven't been past the SW16 since 2012. He has never won the Big12 regular season or conference tournaments. This is honestly the best we can do?

Drew is a Calipari mold con man. He's bad at cheating and has a record that's not good.

Beard is the first choice after the ususal suspects. It just makes sense. He can recruit Texas, he's a good defensive mind, and he's a hungry coach who's been on the verge of a title and came up short. He's young, humble, and hungry. It's perfect.

I have no idea why anyone would be hesitant about hiring Beard. Makes absolutely no sense. I can't even find a single reason.

His atrocious record and lack of accomplishments is a great reason to avoid him. He doesn't really recruit that strong, has double digit losses 3 of his 4 full seasons at TT. Has an awful 2 - 7 record against KU. Would have made the NIT 2 of 4 seasons had there been a postseason last year. And they aren't exactly off to a hot start this season, looking like it's going to be 4 out of 5 seasons with double digit losses at TT. Is this honestly the best we can do?

To be honest, I wouldn’t mind getting Kenny Payne back to lead the program. I would like to know his offensive philosophy first though. Would he run a modern offense or stick with what Cal has been doing? I know. I know. He’s never been a head coach, but he has loads of experience here and I’m not so sure he didn’t do quite a bit of the coaching anyway. He’d be worth a look at least.

I don’t know man, that no head coaching experience kinda kills it. Kentucky is a hell of a first HC job

Yeah, but he’s got the contacts and knows all about the program inside and out. I wouldn’t ever be for hiring someone that has never been a HC unless they were a very top assistant that had already been in our program. I think he’d be up for the challenge.

Brad Stevens needs to be the #1 priority.

Lets see, he makes 3.6 million a year, we're paying Cal almost 10 million. If you can pay a coach 10 million, you can get Brad Stevens here. If Mitch can't get him here, find someone who can. Brad is the guy.

And no more GD lifetime contracts, that's just stupid.

Mark Pope, good coach, great guy, UK alum.

If we are going to take risks on unknowns, I would rather it be guys like this that at least have ties to UK and get it here. Brad Underwood is another reasonable choice, considering he brings Antigua with him. Maybe Holtman at OSU, since he's from Nicholasville.

We have to make Donovan and Wright say no to us first. Then we need to consider Bennett, Pearl and Few in the next tier.

Brad's not leaving the NBA anytime soon. He has a great, young roster. He is at a top franchise, and he is on the cusp of the finals.

Payne definitely has ties to UK. He was Cal’s top assistant for several years. No, he wasn’t a player, but he actually has several more years under his belt with UK than Pope. I’m not saying he would definitely be my choice, I’m just saying I’d sure as hell give him a good look.

Edit: I think I misunderstood your post. I initially thought you were saying you preferred Pope over Payne. I now see you were not.

Would be in over his head quick. Like the guy, think he’s very smart guy but not sure he fits right now. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure who to go after at this point. Only guy I can think of is Stevens but I’m not too sure he doesn’t like the pro game better. I want someone that is dedicated to Kentucky Basketball. I don’t care if we have 1 draft choice in 10 years. This **** I’m watching now and have watched the last few years is god awful. I want my team back. I don’t know who this team is. I’m just tired of the nba commercial. I want my college basketball team back. Nobody is bigger than Kentucky basketball.

We’d be wasting our time with Donovan, Wright, and Few. None of them are leaving their current gigs, and Donovan has already turned us down twice so piss on him anyway. I’ll take a hard pass on Bennett and especially Pearl. I loathe Bennett’s offense and Pearl is scum.

Open the check book and offer Few, did anyone see Gonzaga play today, that’s what a healthy UK program used to look like. Their offense a thing of beauty. If he says no I say offer Holtman, UK ties coached in the big time awhile. If not him take a flier on Pope. Hell we can’t get any worse than we are now. Gillespie coaches better than Cal is right now half drunk.

I agree I do not want Bennet or Pearl here. The more I think about it I don’t really know who I would want out of current head coaches. So maybe we should try an unknown like Payne

You don't know that, you have no idea what Brad wants, but 10 million bucks is 10 million bucks.
Yea, it's not like he passed up other good college offers to go to the NBA, and it's not like he isn't easily the hottest young coach in basketball at the moment getting offers from other NBA franchises. Nor is it like he talks about his happiness in Boston constantly and raves about his team and goals. SMDH!

As has already been pointed out, unless Cal leaves on his own, we can't afford to pay the next coach that much. Nor should we unless they have actually won something.

It would cost us at least $5 million per season for Beard. His contract pays him like $4.5 million per season at Tech.

You think the Celtics wouldn’t just throw more money his way?
I don't know and neither do you. There's a big difference between 3.6m and 10m. Plus, in the nba, tha money goes to the players. It's more about the players thsn the coach in the nba.

College, of course, is the opposite.

Doesn't matter because he won't be at UK regardless.

Drew has been doing this for a long time and no one has sniffed him for a reason. He is too risky, in a probation way.
Same thing that everyone said about Cal when we hired him. Drew won't be at Baylor much longer.

Hiring a well established coach that has done very well already is going to be very difficult. Not very many are going to want to follow Cal AND more importantly they’re not going to want the pressure of the job. Coaches at universities where they can win a title will most likely say no. They’re already well paid and don’t want the headache of the UK job. We experienced this already before we hired Pitino. Lute Olsen turned us down. I think PJ Carlisemo did as well If I remember correctly. I know we were facing probation, but it was still a very attractive job. We had to settle for Pitino, who was not anywhere near what he would become at the time we hired him. Yes he took the likes of Providence to the Final Four, but he still was no where near an experienced, well established head coach. I just don’t see us getting the likes of Stevens, Donovan, Few, Izzo, etc.

He's also won 367 games as a HC. May as well face facts, we're not getting anyone that's made a really deep run in the tournament. Any better ideas? Beard is not coming to Lexington and hasn't been been a HC that long. Who's out there?
