Hard to understand not having Pitino on the list. I feel like the only explanation for that is you thought he was the obvious choice.

I considered Phil Jackson but he was an NBA guy so I don’t know how that translates. Also he won with Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq. I think he was great at managing elite players and their egos. I don’t know how he would do with average talent.

I call BS on this. Race had nothing to do with my vote. Rupp was a hell of a coach.
The dude coached 70 years ago lol. He’d be staggered at the number of black athletes on the floor today, much less the way the game is played. Rupp won primarily because 1) black kids couldn’t play the majority of his career and 2) the NCAA tournament field was significantly smaller than it is today.

Some weird suggestions. Howard? Van Gundy? What time did you start drinking?

Rick Pitino...

I'd probably take him way past his prime tomorrow over most coaches in their prime.

The man is a ball coach.

I don't need to go over his resume...needless to say it's as impressive as it is long.

He's saved and resurrected to great heights every program he's been at.

His prime was some of the best basketball this program has ever seen, if not the best. Built a team that was in the title game 3 years straight.

Would not surprise me one bit to see St. John's advance in March if not next season, the season after.

His resume is certainly longer than his ability to last in sexual congress at an Italian restaurant 😂

Wow! That is a fairly random list of coaches OP. Is this really the question you had burning in your brain? With those specific coaches?

Okay but can we all admit that basketball was completely different back then? I mean black players didn't even play for the majority of Rupp's career.

The tournament had 8 teams in it.

Kentucky was one of the only places in the world that had some of their games televised.

It'd be like saying you'd take Oscar Robertson in his prime over Michael Jordan because he has more championships.

We can admit that basketball was just different back then.

I mean come on, what are we even talking about here?
WTF has black players playing or not playing got to do with it.? They weren’t televising many UK basketball games in the 40’s. With only 8 teams in the tournament you could have the best team in the country and not be invited.

Pretty thin.

What it means is that he avoided coaching against 75-80% of the best players in the country because black athletes weren’t allowed to play. That’s like a boxing champion ducking all the top contenders and only fighting amateurs, has-beens, and past their prime fighters and calling himself “the GOAT”. Kinda like what Floyd Mayweather built his career on.

If he doesn’t have black players and the opposition doesn’t have black players wtf is the difference. Like saying Ruth, Gehrig and Cobb weren’t great players because baseball wasn’t integrated when they played.

You have Alford, Penny & Howard on the list, when most wouldn't put them in the top 50 coaches of all time. Yet you omit Wooden & Pitino?

Rupp built a dynasty. But it's questionable about how well he sustained it (59-73).
Pitino, not on the list, did a quick re-build/recovery, and had the personality to sustain it, but we'll never know if he would have.
Smith was consistently impressive, while not every "wow".
Knight was as good a coach as any on this list, but the personality was NOT one to sustain a dynasty.
Wooden, not on the list, did something that will never be repeated (w/ $$ support), but outside of those dozen years was just ok.
Jackson, great in pro's, when he had one of the 2-3 best in the game leading his team. No idea about college.
I voted for K. He both built (you could argue re-built) a dynasty, and he sustained it. He was actually who I wanted instead of Pitino in 88. Of course we all learned to hate him since then.
Your comments about Rupp show extreme ignorance on your part. He won over 77% with 8 SEC titles in those 14 years in which suggest he let our program collapse. This include 82% with 5 SEC title in his last 5 seasons.

Spoiler: they weren’t because the best competition was playing in the other league 😂
Sure they don’t
what are you even taking about kid?

What do you mean pretty thin?

You think if you revived Adolph Rupp and plucked him on the sidelines in today's college game, that he would win?

Is that really, truly what you think?

What a dumb post, Jesus Christ.

Phil Jackson won't even look at a job unless it's got 2 of the top 5 players in the league. He don't do rebuilds. I don't think he is even that great of a coach. Players make him look good when you got Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc. Then Shaq, Kobe, Big **** Bob, Fish, Fox. Coaching in the NBA is overrated I feel like. Some may disagree but it's a players league and they do what they do and sometimes some of them may respect the Coach but not always. Kobe will give Phil credit for some of the success but while it was going on Phil couldn't control the ****. That's why Shaq had to go. Jerry Krause give Phil a chance out of the CBA and he did get Michael to buy in and share the ball but for the most part I believe they eventually win a chip either way. Just my opinion.
