I started looking at rafters not long after cal was hired. That being said who were your candidates, and how do they rank today?

I honestly don't remember who the different candidates were. I know in 2007 I, like pretty much everybody it seemed, wanted Donovan. But I was interested in Calipari as a 2nd choice then. I was never too interested in Izzo when there were rumors about him.

I'm glad we got cal but I was shocked Donovan shafted us more than once if I remember correctly Jay Wright was high on people's list

Pat Riley or Bill Parcells....

I remember being all in on Donovan (again). I thought we'd end up with Izzo once Donovan passed and was not looking forward that Big 10 style of boredom. Calipari and Memphis losing that game to Missouri was a godsend.

Cal was the obvious choice in 06. He hadnt been to the final four yet, but he was on his way and everyone knew it. He was pulling kids he had no bujsiness getting to Memphis. It was obvious and anyone that says it wasn't is either lying or is uninformed.

My list was small. Donovan or Calipari.

Of course, Barnharts list consisted of guys like Ernie friggin Kent.

I truly wanted Cal before we ever hired Gillispie and was disappointed he wasn't even considered.

Cal wouldn’t have even been considered the 2nd time, but Barnhart felt the :fire:heat:fire: after the Gillispie train wreck.

Does anyone remember the song “this is my town” by Montgomery Gentry? I still remember the “this is Billy G’s town” spinoff song from it some fan made. I remember listening to it, and thinking to myself this dudes about to get run the hell out of this town.

It may have been his town Saturday night around 2am.

Pretty hilarious song to listen to looking back.

Cal or Donovan..........

Im conflicted.........On one hand... Cal's a great man... I love having guys like Davis, Cousins, Wall, Booker, Towns , Ulis and so many more........... But on the other hand..... the NCAA and Rooferees make me wish sometimes that we landed Donovan because he'd never of been treated this badly by the NCAA and officials.

When Cal retires.... the next coach has to be well liked and respected on top of being a damn good coach because this fan base including myself cant watch too much more roofereeing without exploding and going nuclear

The only coach that was on my radar was Coach Cal in 07 and 09. Luckily we didn't have to deal with the Rose situation and the bad 2 years of Gillispie were worth the end results. The question is would our compliance office even have let us sign or play Rose?

I remember a long detailed post on this site from a highly regarded member, who claimed to have "sources" in the athletic department. This poster was adamant that the next coach after Billy Clyde was going to be Billy Donovan. That being said, I was rooting for Tom Izzo to come here.

If you remember, all the national basketball writers were saying how dirty/shady Cal was. I thought this was true at the time, as did MOST of the BBN. I didn't want the Cats to run into any NCAA violation or run the risk of having a banner come down. By the way, I love all of the posters on this site that now claim that they were 100% rooting for Cal to land the job.

Don't remember wanting anyone altho BD would have been acceptable. Certainly not Jay Wright.

Thot Cal was a good choice from the rag-tag lot available.

I would've been fine with either Donovan or Izzo back in '07 and '09. Cal was 3rd on my list.

I believe that was Rick Pitino, I never heard an sane people say Ford or Pelphrey

Oh trust me, I remember seeing people on here (when I used to lurk) and know some people in real life that wanted Ford over Calipari. Granted, these were people that followed Pitino like the Gospel, but they still wanted him.

does anyone know a way to go back and look at posts from 2007-2009? i would love it i wrote a real long post about what Saban was doing at Alabama and that Calipari would be able to do that here and people thought i was the biggest idiot ever. Man I'd love to read some of those posts. Anyways in both 2007 and 2009 Cal was #1 was by a landslide, then Donovan was a clear cut #2, after that Izzo, Jay Wright. Then I remember somewhat being interested in Barnes(thank god that didn't happen) because I was starved for UK to get players like he was getting at Texas. I thought John Beilein had showed some merit at WVU, Jamie Dixon had shown some stuff too, Sean Miller was showing the beginning of a good young coach at Xavier and I thought hey we could get this guy for a 20 year run type of deal. It's funny thinking back on that time I was or I should we were as entire fan base so hungry for a new coach that we thought would turn everything around. Lucky it only took 2 tries haha.

Sean Miller who seems a little dirtier than he was 9 years ago at Xavier. Good coach though. Solid recruiter.
