At this point, big schools are basically hedge funds that dabble in academia and athletics.

The Iowa Athletic dept barely is in the black most years. Most schools have been in the red most years.
The notion that non- profit institutions are somehow profiting from athletics is incorrect.
Sure, coaches are well-paid, clearly.
Any profit from operations goes to capital projects like kinnick.

College sports are not like the NFL.
College football profits finance all Olympic sports...

College sports are not pure pro or pure amateur sports.
It's a weird hybrid business that is not comparable to any normal sports endeavor.

In Europe they keep sports out of education.
Sadly it is the way we might be trending

Eh, there were many people who recognized the perils of opening the NIL Pandora's box, myself being one of them. Yes, there were also many that were strongly in favor of it too.

But it was nowhere near "almost everyone" in favor.

There were parents of players who were split on it. Surprisingly, several fathers told me the same thought, along the lines of, "Talk about putting the 'I' in 'team', this will do that on steroids".

If there is a silver lining, Barta’s incompetence, which stretched the Fran era out about 3-4 years longer than it should have been, allowed for Iowa to be in the right position to land Ben McCollum—a coach who could prove to be one of those once-in-a generation hires who, unlike Lute Olsen, who left for warmer weather, might actually make a long career for himself at Iowa.

Time will tell.

Things worked out for the best. Ben was getting needed experience somewhere else where he could make mistakes out of the bright lights. We got our coach who will lead Iowa to its golden age. No way would Barta have hired him if he let Fran go 4 years ago.
