They (CDC) did the same thing with GRID in the 80's. Gay related immune disease was renamed AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) after it was confirmed to be limited primarily to gay men. So to avoid "stigmatizing" the entire Hershey highway population, they changed the name of "GRID" to "AIDS" so the Sodomites could continue their happiness without fear or being targeted for death.
