My guess would be Obama...but I would also guess it needs to be put in context, like say, hypothetically, if he were encouraging immigrants who are seeking to assimilate, then they should learn the language.

Did I get it correct?

What he's leaving out is the context of the quote and how Obama was saying this.......here's what he left out......

"If you're going to have a coherent, cohesive society, then everybody has to have some agreed-upon rules. And there are going to have to be some accommodations that everybody makes. And that includes the people who are newcomers. The question is, are those fair?" Obama said.

"Should we want to encourage newcomers to learn the language of the country that they're moving to? Of course," he continued. "Does that mean that they can never use their own language? No, of course it doesn't mean that, but it's not racist to say, 'Ah, if you're going to be here then you should learn the language of the country that you just arrived at because we need to have some sort of common language in which all of us can work, and learn and understand each other.

"It gets more sensitive, obviously, around religious issues. That becomes more challenging, and I don't have simple solutions to all of that," the former president said. "But, I guess what I think we have to do in order to push back against...what are clearly racist motives of some... we can't label everybody who is disturbed by immigration as a racist. "

That sounds very rational and reasonable to me. Maybe the people that keep saying Obama is a psycho can read that and lighten up a little bit.

A problem with our discourse in this country is that something like that quote, which actually takes many seconds to say/read and which contains some nuance, is less and less permitted. Instead, you have five seconds to say something and if there is any possible way it can be interpreted as not perfect (by any particular persons definition of perfect), you get attacked.

It is true that some completely normal things said by Obama years ago are being said by Trump now and the reaction is like he's a crazy man. The Baltimore remarks are an example. Trump said it and people went crazy and then it turned out a bunch of other people had already said it, like Cummings (the representative Trump was calling out) and the Mayor of Baltimore and Bernie Sanders. Trump truly does have the power to make people crazy.
