Who replaces Baker?

Disagree. Three is plenty (and I would assume perhaps Whitney can play some SG in a pinch).

Our 2012 title team really only had 2 "guards". Teague and Lamb.

That team only went 7 deep total. Miller played 26 mpg and Wiltjer 11. The 8th guy was Vargas at 6 mpg. You don't need to be 10 deep, and you don't need any more than 3 guards.

And to add on to that post. In 14 the Harrison twins were the only 2 guards. And we only went 8 deep total. Poythress 18 mpg, Dakari 14, and Lee 6 off the bench.

The '16 team had 4 guards. Ulis, Murray, Hawkins, and Briscoe, but Briscoe played SF and Hawkins played 9 minutes. Murray and Ulis played 35 and 37 mpg respectively.

In '17 we had 4 guards. Fox, Monk, Hawkins and Briscoe. Again Briscoe played SF. Hawkins did help out with 19 minutes. Fox and Monk played about 30 mpg.

You don't need 4 guards. Injury is about the only reason you need 4, but if you end up having to rely on your 4th best guard for a lot of minutes you are in trouble anyway, and expecting to have a 4th best guard good enough to still win a title with if you had injuries is pie in the sky dreaming.

I expect Hagans to play between 30-35 mpg. Expect Maxey and Quick to be in the 25-30 range. In fact I would argue trying to work a 4th guy in and taking minutes from those 3 is detrimental on the whole. At most you would need a 4th guy for is for very spot minutes in the case of foul trouble (like 5-10 or so in a random game or two). Getting a 4th guard isn't likely to have any impact on the team's outcome. Three is plenty.

It would be nice to have the added depth, but there’s a lot of value in a tight rotation, if it’s the right rotation.

Exactly. Last year we started getting better when we lost Quade because it allowed others to find their roles and develop more. Sometimes too much depth is actually detrimental.

And most of the time you're 4th guard isn't good enough to carry you through if your top guys get injured. If a 4th guy is that good and isn't playing a lot to begin with you're probably going to have chemistry problems.

A 4th guard would be more of a luxury, certainly not a necessity. It would have to be someone like Cam Justice who might be willing to mostly ride pine all year just because he's a KY boy.

Ok, while there are plenty of examples of us not having depth at guard (2012 being one) and many have shared, I feel like there are some things to consider...

1. 2012 had Davis and MKG. The guards in general didn't win games for us, they did. Though Lamb was awesome I wouldn't say he was one of 3 best players on team. Our guard/wings will be key next year.

2. Lamb was maybe the best shooter in Cal era and still wasn't better than others on 2012 team. Next years team won't have that and Baker was a shooter...even if he didn't show it last year.

3. Whatever season you want to provide as an example that we don't need 4 guards, IMO you are playing with fire in having only 3 quality guards. If one guy goes down you are in a heap of trouble.

Granted injuries are part of the game and everyone can't always have a viable replacement where you don't miss a beat. Point is, if it were to happen or someone needed to play extended minutes I'd rather it be a guy like Baker than a walk on unless they are the next Cameron Mills.

I get what many are saying...but I'd prefer to have 10 guys that can play...even if some ride the pine. It protects you from refs, injuries....and BTW we are UK...we can get people to come here.

I'm bringing up Brad because that is who we have now as a 4th guard.

Read the freaking question on the post. I'm asking who we get...lol.

I am at least making suggestions. You are just saying we will get someone better.

All I asked is who people think we will get and suggested a couple transfers I thought would fit the bill.
Get you perfectly, so many on here think Quickly and Maxey are Steph Curry part 2, these 2 cannot cut it as ' Shooting ' guards ala Herro. A grad transfer who is also experienced, is almost a ' must ' !

Exactly! Who would have thought EJ was going to be the least played big man most of this season going into the year?

HS players are unknowns...we see tape but they've proved nothing in college.

I think Maxey will be good and I trust Cal, but I'm allowed an opinion and if it is me I am bringing in a KNOWN quality SG or Wing Combo who can knock down a jumper. I think Cal will do it.
