Coach A is 1st in recruiting every year and always gets the guys that hold out until the end. Coach A is always in the final 4 of college football.

Coach B is 28th average in recruiting because of the school he coaches and always ends up in the top 10 in college football.

Coach A. Coach B would be pretty dependent on SOS. If you play a bad schedule every year and you’re competing against people with recruiting no better than yours, you’ll get to the top 10 more easily than if you’re in an elite conference. If someone was recruiting 28th in the SEC and ending the year in the top 10, I would feel very different about that coach than if it was in a weaker conference

Better overall Coach is A, but the better Coach of the Talent he has is Coach B.

Based on teh information given, definitely Coach A. If you want to ignore that recruiting is part of being a coach, then Coach A would still be the better coach. Not everybody can take top talent and win a championship or consistently be in the top 4. Not everybody that can overachieve with lesser talent can also get the most out of top talent, especially if they are a systems coach.

But certainly if somebody was consistently top ten while coaching in the SEC with recruiting ranked around 28th, that might be a closer case.

Recruiting is part of the coaches job. If the coach brought in a re ruiting class that averaged a 93 ranking every year would he not be fired over his poor recruiting effort ? Good recruiting and also coaching them up is a necessity in the SEC to compete

Of course you would because you are talking about an elite program with a good coach. So you agree with the Heismann selection as well. The player on the best team that contributes is better than a world beater on a so-so team (the best player rarely wins).

I totally disagree on both fronts. There are only about 6 programs that have the boosters to secure the level of talent of coach A. There is no way a Saban or Mullen can recruit the talent at MSU that they can at Florida or Alabama. Personally, I believe Mullen is a better coach than Saban. When he gets the talent it will become obvious.

So what everyone that chooses A is saying is that nobody can be the best unless they coach at one of the 6 programs which is the primary reason Mullen left us. And we still have fans that hate him for it. I say, "Bravo Coach Mullen! You know that it ain't going to happen unless you have the boosters!"

I'd go Coach A.

You do realize the Bama sucked for quite some time before Saban got there...DuBose was 24-23, Franchione 17-8, Mike Shula 10-23 and then Saban comes along in '07 and wins them a natty in '09. I believe that Saban could've built the machine that he has built in his time at Bama (or something similar) at any one of MSU, OM, South Carolina, A&M, LSU, Georgia, Tenn, UF, UK, Ark, AU, and countless other schools in the country that has a fan base that will support the program, especially one that is winning at that level. Pete Carroll could have too along with a hand full of other coaches who can both recruit and coach at the highest level. Dabo has done it a Clemson that had an MSU or probably more OM like history. Mullen will never build what Dabo or Saban has because he hates recruiting. The elite of the elite can coach and recruit.

I absolutely do not agree that Mullen is better than Saban. Mullen made some absolutely head scratching playcalls when he was here. Waayy more than Saban ever had plus Mullen puts too much emphasis on seniors playing over underclassmen even if he had better underclassmen sitting on the bench.

Look, I’ve seen State win the Gator Bowl...
Like... that was great, but if you’re asking me what I would prefer...

Give me the coach that “underperforms”, but gets us into the CFP.

I'm guessing that your premise is that if both of these coaches were at the same program, Coach B would likely out-coach Coach A. That's entirely possible, but not known. I'd say that Coach A is proven, and is at a blue blood. Coach B MIGHT be better, but he hasn't gotten his shot. So we don't know.

It's hard to turn down Coach A. That would be like Saban or Dabo at MSU. Would probably work out alright.

It depends on what school they are coaching at respectively. A guy having the #1 recruiting class at Alabama, Texas, USC, etc is not a huge accomplishment and it gives the guy a huge advantage. If Coach B is at a school like MSU ending up ranked in the top 10 every year, there is a large chance he would whoop Coach A’s *** if he got a job that recruited itself. If they are both at a premier school and having those results then Coach A is the better coach.

Football X's and O's are probably about 25% of what is required for a power 5 football coach to be successful. The rest is some combination of recruiting and managing the program. Outperforming your talent level is great, but trying to minimize Saban's success based on the fact that he has the most talent is the dumbest **** ever. And while Alabama has a much higher recruiting ceiling, their current talent level is due to Saban's track record and the fact that he emphasizes recruiting (because he's not an idiot and he knows that you can't win titles without top tier talent). From 2001-2006, Bama's recruiting rankings were 28, 47, 41, 21, 16, and 13.....so the fact that he has the most talented roster in the country is just another feather in his cap.

Coaches at the non blue blood schools are more prone to make "head scratching" calls because the talent level isn't there. Coaching is easy if you have the talent. Of course, Saban gets the talent so a "head scratched" for him usually results in a successful play. I would choose A because you get NCs but then I would have to pull for another school which I will never do.

I can hate Mullen for leaving but appreciate what he did while he was here.
