I don't think it's gonna be Alford, to tell you the truth. I think he probably wants the job, but I was watching CBS Sports yesterday talking about the job and it seems clear that IU wants a coach who has won a championship somewhere or at least gotten close. They aren't looking to just stay in the family.

I believe Alford has been asked a couple of times about the job, and hasn't said anything about how he's staying at UCLA, UCLA is where I want to be, etc. So that sounds like he's at least interested.

Let's see, he played at iu, he's taken his teams to a couple of FF's AND has won two games in a row over Kentucky; JMUO but despite the "controversies" elsewhere he seems to fit the bill there. Especially since he's won against UK! We are so in their heads!

Personally, I don't think the possibility of his leaving ucla has been played up enough.

I don't think IU has asked Alford, otherwise, Alford would be the coach of IU right now.

I would go after Marshall. If he can put good teams together that play fundamentally sound ball year and year out, then why risk it with Alford? Assuming Donovan is off the table.

I do think there is a very good chance it's Alford. If it were Marshall, Archie Miller, etc. something would have leaked by now. I at least think it's someone who is still alive in the tournament. Alford, Mack, Holtmann

Ummmm, no.

Alford is playing Friday to make his first Elite-8 in 20+ years of coaching.

lets say that Alford has quietly accepted the IU job or has been contacted about it. No way he is fully into the UCLA / KY game.

A part of him wants this season over so he can get started with his dream job

Well who the hell does that leave? There aren't many who have won or have gotten close that would ever leave where they are today, and Alford isn't doing it this year, so by "won a championship", are they fine with a Div II title?

Oh, wait for it.....TUBBY???

Are you talking about Alford? When did he ever take a team to the Final Four as a coach?

Never mind. I see someone else already responded to that.

As for candidates, there's a few I'd consider but there's no home run hire.

Greg Marshall
Fred Hoiberg simply because of his NBA experience
Steve Alford

There's no one who has made a Final Four outside of Marshall that they would consider. Thad Matta, Huggins and those types aren't going to happen. I honestly don't know what they're going to do if they don't get Alford.

If Indiana contacted him while he is still coaching UCLA in the tourney, they are trash. Cal was already out of the tournament before Kentucky even fired Gillispie.

Alford has been the one contacting IU not the other way around. There is no interest in Alford.

Bennett or Collins are the names floating around now. If you don't hear anything in the next week or two, Donovan may actually be in play.

I would love to see them choose either Lo Romar or Johnny Jones. Then they could hire bobby knight as their assistant. Then knight could teach the coach ho to do it the knight way. That should make the boosters happy without clappy.

Billy Donovan is NOT going to Indiana.

You don't know that anymore than i know he is. There's enough talk among many IU guys that interest is at least there. How small that interest is, we don't know. Stevens is not going to Indiana. Jay Wright is not going to Indiana. Calipari, Self, Pitino, are not going to Indiana. Those things we know. Donovan not going to indiana isn't something we know, not yet. Donald Trump will not be the president...o wait...

IU looking for a coach who has won a title or gotten close?

I hope you are right because that would narrow their list to:

John Calipari
Jay Wright
Rick Pitino
Coach K
Bill Self
Roy Williams
Tom Izzo
Billy Donovan
Kevin Ollie
Jim Calhoun
Jim Boeheim
Gary Williams
Tubby Smith
Lute Olson

As for guys who have gotten close, a lot of the same names...

Please IU, please let that be your list. It is a great list, go ahead and spend time on calling all of them.

Pitino would go to Indiana in a millisecond. Right after convincing Donovan not to take it.

I have relatives in Indiana who attended IU and they do not Alford under any circumstances. It's his personality they Do not like. They say he does not relate well to his fan base.

I think Marshall's wife put the kibosh on that tbh

And I disagree - if it's Alford, it's not likely to be made public while UCLA is still playing.

Its because he's not that good of a coach and he fumbled the pierre pierce situation pretty bad. Its why i give him a 5% chance, its just an easy choice for the media to latch on to.

Not the guys those fools think they have a chance with. Not Donovan, certainly not Brad Stevens (they actually have fans who think that's possible). Probably not Alford, though that one's at least possible.

And if I was Archie Miller, I'm not sure I take that job. Thad Matta is on very thin ice at Ohio State. Miller could wait a year. slide into that position, make just as much money (or close), have great resources, and not have a loony fanbase that thinks it's still 1985.

LOVE watching IUsedtobe fans go out of their way to convince themselves it's not going to be Alford when deep down they know it's going to be Alford.

If they want Alford they should be cheering for UK this week. The Closer UCLA gets to the Championship game, the more out of reach he becomes.
