Oats is the correct answer and it ain't close.

If Bruce Pearl didn’t have so much baggage, I'd kill to have him. His teams are athletic as hell, they run a high octane offense and they pressure the hell out of their opponents on defense, but, like I said, too much baggage, so give me Nate Oats all day.

Mark Pope. He’s not a big name but neither was Brad Stevens before Butler. Pope is good at X‘s and O’s. He will have all the resources in the world so the rest will take care of itself.
I would like either of these options I would definitely love Pope because he’s one of our own and he’s done a fantastic job at the places he’s been.

Then the 2nd not so popular option I’d love to have Pitino the coach back he was the 2nd best coach UK ever had behind Rupp.

My 3rd option would be Oats if the other 2 say no.

If Oats says no, I’d go Pearl. Don’t even care.

Oats might be ok, but Bruce Pearl! The guy has cheated everywhere he’s been and is on probation now. I can’t stand him, he’s way scummier than Pitino. IMO

Oats (47 years old), Mussleman (57 years old), Drew (51 years old), Vogel (48 years old), Donovan (56 years old).

Any of those five would make me happy. The last two have NBA coaching experience.

Donovan and Mussleman are both a bit on the older side, so I'd go for Drew, Oats, or Vogel first.

Cal's a washed-up used car salesman. I want to give him one last shot with the Sharpe class, but I think it will be more of the same.

The answer is Oats or Drew.

Billy Donovan is like the hot girl you missed out on and can't get over it, so you keep on trying, unsuccessfully. No Thanks. Pitino is even worse, can't believe anyone would want him. It's like selling your soul...

How about the Laker's coach? Kentucky connections and as soon as Lebron tires of him he'll be fired anyway. Mark Pope is worth a look.
Two key criteria are high energy, understands the demands of the job beyond coaching.

I’ve liked Oates for a while now. Definitely since before last season. I also like Drew but it’ll be hard to get him from Baylor.

I agree with what Jeff said about Stevens and Donovan. I used to think they’d be worth a call, but no. Keep NBA ties away. Only exception I’d make is for Vogel because he understands the culture here and if anyone from the NBA would prioritize UK, it’s be him. Then again, NBA coaches rarely make good college coaches, and vice versa.

Oates and Drew are my picks. Hard for me to pick a fav between them. They both recruit well and want to win.

Anybody watching Baylor play right now has to see we need Scott Drew. Give him the entire state of Kentucky. Whatever it takes.
You don't think Drew would leave Baylor do you ? Drew built this program from scratch. When he took over this program he wasn't even allowed to play games the first half of his first year, and had only a few scholarships to work with. He built this program from zero and made them into national champions. You are dreaming if you think Drew would leave Baylor for Kentucky or anywhere else.

Cal is done. Only sycophants think otherwise.

Donavan but that's not happening.

Donovan would be my first choice on that list too but i agree with you. i don’t see him coming back. maybe make him say no first. after getting his butt whooped by Cal for 6 years the UK job probably looks a lot more attractive to him than the last two times we offered.

If not donovan, Scott Drew. It took a while, but he’s turned Baylor into a power house and that’s impressive.

He makes less than 3 million a year. He has no ties to baylor prior to his time there(though 18 years or w/e is a really long time).

I know in your head you’ve been forced to elevate baylor to blue blood status since they accomplished the impossible and beat your unbeatable zags last season, but the reality is some programs will always be stepping stones unless the coach is actually from that area.

Nah, the NBA is so different from the college game and those NBA guys don't want to worry about recruiting and university commitments.

This is why donovan is unlikely. I think he just didn’t want to recruit in this environment anymore.

Losing Tatum to Duke from a high school that had fed him David Lee and Bradley Beal previously was probably the last straw. (tatum came a few seasons after donovan had left but the writing was on the wall that Nike and team usa were sending him to Duke).
