Advice for all politicians getting a question like this. One of two answers:
Answer 1. Yes. Taiwan is very important to the USA and we need to do our best to ensure they keep their independence.
Answer 2. We need to stop getting ourselves involved in conflicts on the other side of the globe and worry about the problems we have here...like gas prices and healthcare. Or some crap like that.

Could easily say “it’s extremely complicated. And a decision that needs to be made by committee as we discuss and debate all options. But most important we need to make sure that we have a strong military to protect American interests both inside and outside the country without getting involved in needless wars.”Even those are a little bit loaded answers for the question. If you don't know how to answer the question, you have to go way high level.
"I'm still being debriefed on all of the facts about that situation and prefer not to answer specifically until I have all of the facts. That said, I support the USA and it's military first and foremost and will always put them in positions for success and safety.
