The more intriguing question is will Kirk retire or would Barta have to fire him?

So U of I president has announced his retirement but will stay on board till his successor is named. Not sure any coaching candidates of merit consider Iowa with the school’s senior leadership in flux. Barta, the AD is also a guy who has received tremendous criticism with how he has led the department in the past and he may feel his seat is getting warm as well.

As an Iowa fan, I want Klieman. I don’t care what the buyout is go get him. Luke Fickell would also be awesome but I have a feeling he could be going to a blue blood soon such as Michigan or USC.

Brian Ferentz. Sonny boy will take over and win 6-7 games a year for a decade.

Last year at this time that seemed likely. Right now his odds are about the same as Sandy Buda taking over.

Not just the unrest over the Summer where he was a pivotal character, most folks outside of his dad within the program don't like him. The guy is a next level doosh.

He’s a terrible offensive mind. Do not want him to take over.

Bobby Stoops is 60, not 70. He's in the prime of his life.

But yes, Chris Klieman (53) is a logical choice. Iowa born. Played at UNI. Rumor has it that he turned down the MIchigan State job and soon thereafter signed a 6-year extension which doubled his salary at K-State. $6 million buyout.

The Iowa job is a decent job and they should be able to attract a pretty good coach. Their fans are realistic for the most part, the administration doesn't fire you if you have a rough stretch, and like any D1 job now you get a 4 or 5 year contract for a couple mil per, so it is a modern day lottery ticket. Iowa will do just fine when Kirk retires.

I do not believe Brian Ferentz will get the job, Iowa is going after someone with previous HC experience. Stoops? Mike Leach? Bill Cowher? It will definitely be someone with the “it” factor. Probably a Mike Norvell or Luke Fickell.

Mike Leach at Iowa. That would fit about as well as Mike Riley at Nebraska. I'm all for it.

I wonder if they make a run at Mark Stoops. He's done a solid job at Kentucky - if you ignore the cheating.

Would he have to get a release from Alvarez, since that is who he works for currently?
Alvarez basically owes Iowa as they taught him about coaching and creating a winning program. He patterned the program at Wisconsin at what he learned at Iowa. Barry basically owes his career to Hayden Fry, he won’t hesitate releasing anyone for a chance at coaching the Hawkeyes.

You've lost your entertainment value.

As for who can replace Kirk, there's a dead buzzard somewhere that could do the same job....

Obvious you know nothing about his Head Coach Bob Devaney..

If they were to replace him under their current microscope they would most likely look for a black HC.

They've had an all time run over the last 5-6 years but they're done and their fans probably know their time is about up. KKKirk has at best 5 more years left and their QB has a long ways to go based off what I've seen. To add to that their long time racist POS S&C coach is gone. Once KKK is gone so is the "Iowa way". I don't see them doing any better than taking a chance on some coordinator and won't be anything more than a .500 team unless they get lucky.

Sure the trolls on here annoy me but as a Coloradan I couldn't care less about their program. One of the more boring programs in the conference. And that says a lot considering the B1G is a very boring conference. To think they could bring in some name coach is absolutely laughable.

Edit: To add to that, their program is one of the more antiquated programs in P5. There's no one out there who can continue their model at any level of success. Once KKK is gone they're going to have to reinvent themselves. Good luck with that, we've been trying for 20 years.
