Where's Sims?

Because Smith racks up big numbers against nobody’s.

He has zero movement on anything and left that ball letter high down the middle. Any collegiate hitter should have smashed that out.

Contrary to popular belief on this board, Sims can’t pitch every bullpen inning we have in SEC play this year. It’s the 6th inning and we weren’t even ahead.

What a stupid response. No one on this thread or any thread I remember have implied that. But several have talked about how solid the bednar/sims combo has been on Saturdays. Then for some reason with a tie game going into sixth we switch to put smith in instead.

If I was bednar, I'd be hacked.

So when the heck are we supposed to pitch him then? We can’t pitch him yesterday because that was a blowout early. But a tie game Saturday (or even before they tied it up), you 17ing have to use your best reliever. Decent chance he may not pitch a meaningful inning all weekend now.

You can make very valid argument that Smith had been every bit as good as Sims prior to today.

Sure, let’s throw our closer 4 innings in a tie game in March. If that’s the approach we take, then we’re either a. Accepting that he’s going to pitch in one game and only one game per week or b. Accepting that we may wear him out by the time June gets here.

If this were a super regional series and we’re down 0-1, then absolutely, I agree you throw him there. But it’s not. It’s a game in March. It’s not critical we win this game or this series. We’re taking the long approach as we should in March.

I know it's early in the season but I'm a believer in win the day and let tomorrow face tomorrow. 4 innings would not hurt his arm but he would just be done for the weekend. I would much rather go into tomorrow tied up with a chance to win the series than trying to avoid a sweep.

And, if bednar and sims couldn't beat hogs today, fristoe and sims won't likely beat them tomorrow.

Always go for the win. It's about mentality as much as anything.

I mean I hear you, but it’s not like we brought in a scrub. We brought in Brandon Smith who has probably been our second best reliever to date. If we can’t consistently trust guys other than Sims in our bullpen, we’re not going anywhere anyways. We’ve got to be willing to put other guys in these situations to figure out who we can trust in June while not overburdening our best guy. Obviously today it may have cost us, but it’s one game.

Btw, I’m also not convinced we would have won had we brought Sims in. Certainly we would have had a better chance, but we also did not score after that point.
