That's exactly right. For the last two years Ameer masked a very average offensive line because he is a stud. One pre-season game in the NFL and he has already shown his agility and acceleration is good enough to make professionals look silly.

Recruited well? How about we talk about these guys as college athletes. We don't need to resort to their Rivals ranking at this point. Cross has never been great. Newby has never been great. Taylor has clearly never been the same since the broken leg - he's a non factor at this point. Jury is still out on Wilbon. In case this isn't enough evidence check the stat line from the BYU game - we don't have an offensive line that run blocks well.

Given that at one point we had 17 carries for like 30 some yards, pounding the rock just to pound the rock on an obviously outgunned OL doesn't seem like it would generate much offense. So then we're left with, "well I'd rather just lose big running the ball than having a chance at playing the matchup in front of me".

The other issue with the pass game, which I did think blossomed a lot, half the throws were basically run game screens anyway. This wasn't Beck's game where everything was Abdullah or the deep ball.

The last issue is that the defense was not coached properly on prevent defense did they not teach gangwish to keep the qb in the pocket - this kid would kill for his team if he had been taught this he would have done it - Instead he loses contain tyhey complete the hail mary, win the game and on top of it gangwish is now hurt - This was bad coaching

Coverage was good. KO's were good. Returns were fine. We have an inconsistent place kicker. Heck, we even replaced an All America caliber punter with a converted QB and still pinned them inside the 20. On the whole, I'd say ST weren't a huge needle in our side, we saw adjustments even.

Gangwish is a veteran player, and presume he is not a complete blank slate. He's going to know that keeping the QB in the pocket is probably the general goal on that type of play, and was probably taught this at several levels of football and probably under this current and previous staff. He didn't do it on the last play Saturday, was he beat by his man, did he just "wing it" because its the last play, was he physically unable, or was he hurt and therefore unable to finish the play strong?

I don't think any of us knows for sure, and Gangwish probably won't be asked directly. I think anyone, even my wife, who casually watches football knows that keeping contain is a general positive, but that knowledge doesn't always translate onto the field. Certainly Gangwish would know.

It takes awhile to grow an OL. This is partially why NU used to be successful, we could afford to let a guy percolate and step on the field as a senior an dominate. Gates won't have the luxury that the Pipeline guys had in 95.

We're going to build experience under fire, and its always paid in blood.

Cav will build us a pretty good line, methinks, but it ain't coming real soon either. If he can make the current guys pretty solid, we'll see more offensive confidence and less depantsing, but in the mean time it'll be a roller coaster ride.

None of these "preseason" games are must win for me. If NU were looking at a national championship run, then sure. But we're not. Really all that matters now is that we get better week to week and show up for the conference schedule. If we hit the conference playing well, we could win the West and go to the title game, be a nice little feather in the cap. In which case, going 0-4 or 2-2 makes little difference to me there.

What's going to be a hard pill to swallow for many fans is that NU in the next couple years gets Oregon and OSU on the slate. Next year we could be a much better team and still go basically 9-3. The following year we could be pretty good as well, except we'll be breaking in young QB's again, and most teams historically don't do great with super young QB's.

Development at NU at this time, is going to be one of patience, and not so much "Bob Stoops walks into a loaded roster and wins it all in year 2" type of deal.

Wisconsin threw the ball 39 times vs Bama....do you think they are in full meltdown mode? BYU stacked the box vs us daring us to pass....get use to it. If we are any good, we should exploit that with that pass. As I explained to you earlier...go back and watch the game. Quite a few of our passing plays can be considered an extension of our run game.

At the same time, when ameer was injured last year, we still did ok with the run, but there was a drop in production. His loss hurts tremendously.

If BYU stacked the box consistently, getting the yards on the ground was going to be very difficult. Just my two cents...

And you could be correct but normally a team even those players not starting are better at something they have been used to for several years.

I do not want to be the guy that seems to be obsessed with this team failing because I want Riley to succeed and I want banker to succeed - So I will just leave it and let the year play out good or bad. I am very concerned about our defense and the philosophy on offense but it is what it is and I will root for these kids and coaches

Quick fixes do happen, but they are not the norm. I've said many times before, with the hires that were made (and the hires not made), this program is on a long road back to national prominence. We did not hire a rock star, and we did not hire a recruiting lighting rod. We hired an experienced, steady hand and let him bring along his staff from OSU.
Will it work? We'll just have to wait and see.
How long will it take? Probably longer than any of us hope.
Should we lower our expectations? Probably in the near-term.
Should we lower our goals? Never.

I was drinking a lot of Kool-Aid over the summer. After Saturday, it is painfully obvious that Bo's "recruiting" is going to bite us in the butt this year. There are numerous holes, and Bo did not do this program any favors in terms of quality depth. IMO, if Bo were still here he would be staring a 6-6 season right in the face, if not worse. And we may see that this year anyway. All of a sudden those games with Northwestern, Minnesota, Rutgers and Iowa are far more difficult than I thought over the summer. It's going to be a dog fight to get to 6 or 7 wins this year. There are some solid athletes on this team, but not enough. While I'm not ridiculously optimistic like I was over the summer, I'm still highly optimistic that in the long term Riley is going to be a really good hire for us, he's going to bring in quality recruits and develop talent. I think long term he thrives here.

Where did this Oline get all of this expertise at pass blocking in recent history that has been a real weak spot.

I think Riley did a good job of improving TA and also the pass blocking to a smaller extent - however he did a poor job of co0aching a power run game that could have won this game for us

And I don't buy that past results mandates future performance. Just because we put a few RBs in the NFL over last few years doesn't mean that one or more of our current RBs is NFL caliber.

We don't suck all of the sudden. We sucked last year too, but Ameer was good enough to make the result look better. Ameer was a special back, and I didn't see anything special out of our RBs on Saturday. Wilbon appears to be the only one with an outside chance of growing into special.

Things have been sliding for a few years, but we've managed to keep it mostly covered. But once the special playmaker is no longer around to bail everyone out, then the weaknesses that were there all along are now readily apparent for all to see. During Crouch's SR year, I remember noticing how QB-dominant our run game was. That worked well when that QB is a Heismann winner, but not so much the next year when you had a mere human at the helm. Then it was suddenly obvious that we had real problems, and that they had been masked by Crouch's stellar play.
