No comment and want voters decide = keep the flag—thats just their way to say it.

I can tell you for a fact they have nowhere near the votes to change it in either chamber. You have seen your last regional at Dudy Noble.

Yes, that's the way I see it too.

You are wrong, 8Dog. It means they don’t want to take a tough vote. They’re worried about upsetting a few in their conservative base, so they don’t want to vote “Change.” But they also don’t want to put there name as voting for the confederate battle flag version either and be labeled an insensitive racist. If they have to vote, a massive majority of these no comment and popular vote folks will vote to change it.

And thus, this important issue DEMANDS a full vote of the MS Legislature!!!

I am telling you- they do not have the votes right now. So
we can disagree on the other, but if they voted today the flag would stay.

I agree. They don't have the votes this year. But the momentum is building.

You are just 100% dead wrong on this. “Don’t have the votes” just means not enough are on the record as saying they want to change. But you can count on one hand the number of people who’ve indicated they’ll vote to keep the flag as is. And there won’t be that many more added to their numbers. This is just people who don’t want to have to vote either way on this. If there was a vote today, and these cowards HADto cast a vote, CHANGE would pass by very wide margins. 100% lock.

“Do not have the votes” is just political cover. They want to make it sound like the votes aren’t there, so they will feed it as a voter referendum to “give it every chance.” How Noble of them, huh? But this is just political posturing to avoid taking a tough vote. You’ve just got a bunch of cowards who don’t want to have to vote one way or the other on this issue. If they are forced to vote, there will not be many who sign there name to the toxic Confederate battle flag version.

They’ll have the votes as soon as they have to take the vote. If the vote was today, it would pass overwhelmingly to CHANGE. Trust me on this. “We don’t have the votes” is just cover to not have to vote. But who are all these legislators who are against changing the flag? Show them to me. You can count them on ONE HAND!!!!

I am telling you- they do not have the votes right now. So
we can disagree on the other, but if they voted today the flag would stay.

Senator Chris McDaniel has a video on his Facebook explaining they don't have the votes at the moment. It's the first few minutes of His latest video.

Summed up in a nutshell Blues (Dems) say change, Reds (Rep) either say no comment or let voters decide. IE I want to get re-elected or not until I can determine if I can get re-elected before voting to change. SAD.

This the correct take. Those who want to 'put it to a vote' don't want to take a side either way because they know they'll lose support from whatever group is on the opposite side. Best way to ensure you don't lose any precious votes for re-election is to take tough issues like this and punt it to a referendum. Once the outcome of the vote is out there, they can claim to be on the winning side all along, or just say 'the people have spoke' and wash their hands of any responsibility. That way, they can't be held accountable for (God forbid) "representing" us.

How can someone in 2020 keep their elected position by voting to keep the state flag with the Confederate emblem? That should be a career killer for any politician that would vote to keep it. I'm willing to bet those that support keeping the traitor emblem also hope athletes stand up for national anthem which makes zero sense.

That is pretty pathetic.
This is an opportunity for those in the majority to be part of a historical change for the better.

I really don't understand what the concern is. Are republican representatives afraid that if they vote to change the flag, they will be voted out of office?
...will their electorate suddenly vote for a Democrat as retribution for the flag vote?- of course not.
...will some other person run as a Republican and challenge the incumbent Republican?...thsts possible, but presumably, that person's entire platform will be about the flag, so the challenger will come off as someone who is just mad that their racist flag was changed. I would hope the voters would not support someone like that, but i guess 50 gonna 50.

Its just odd to think Republicans would lose support in their districts for this since the alternatives are far fetched.

There’s even a handful of democrats that are no comment because if they speak in favor of a flag change they will immediately have a primary opponent next election.

Only thing I’ll say is that June 12th might as well have been 20 years ago. Quite a bit has happened since then. Would love to see an updated polling to see if they really “don’t have the votes”.

Ok, that's a good point as I was only viewing this from the perspective of it not making sense for a republican to not support it.

If its a Democrat, I could see them being concerned for being re-elected to begin with, so anything thst may push voters towards the right would be bad.

Its equally pathetic of them to not take a position tol, just to be clear. Also, anyone unwilling to vote should be voted out asap.

No, you are wrong. 8dog is right. The votes are not there in the legislature as it stands right now.

How embarrassing that our legislature can't get the votes to get rid of the confederate emblem as our state flag. It gets harder and harder to defend this state.

Just realized that they updated these numbers on Friday. Its in the top of the article

Count as of June 19:
  • 44 members want the Legislature to change the flag
  • Three want to keep the current flag
  • 28 want voters to decide
  • 27 provided no comment
  • 22 members have not yet been reached for comment.

I’ve emailed everyone I can - my local senator / rep, hosemann, Reeves, gunn. I’m sure they’ll all read my email**

But figure it’s the least I can do to encourage them to make a change.

They updated the numbers as responses came in. They probably haven't gone back to see if any of the no commenters are now willing to commit, or if any that have committed want to change their response.

This flag situation is like a stubborn man with a chronic abscess.....

Sorry if this is German. But this was from June 12th on where members of the house in Mississippi stand on changing the flag. Only 3 came right out and said keep the flag. But 1 of those 3 is from Oxford.... wonder if these opinions are the same after the news from last week

https://mississippitoday.org/2020/0...stand-on-changing-the-mississippi-state-flag/

Its hurting him, its holding him back, its greatly diminishing his quality of life, it is never going to get any better on its own and is potentially life threatening but he is unwilling to go through the temporary discomfort necessary to get it fixed. Very tragic.

The republicans should introduce the current Georgia flag with the edit of magnolia flower inside the ring stars as the new flag. Tell Sankey to KMA.

Y'all get your sports. Bubba keeps his heritage. Hahahaha.

There are several blues with no comment or “let the voters decide” as wells as reds who want to change it. Painting with broad strokes is how stereotypes are formed and we all know that’s not kosher.

The votes aren’t there to want to vote on this issue!! That is 100% the truth and the facts. As soon as there is a vote forced on the legislature, the votes to change will immediately surface. Voting to keep the flag as is will be political suicide in the months and few years to come. And these people know it. They just don’t want to take a tough vote!

And if you want more proof than my spot-on perfect political analysis, then ask yourself this question and answer it:

If “the votes aren’t there,” then why do most all Democrats want to take this to a vote in the legislature? It’s one of two reasons. Either they know the votes will be there, which is a correct answer. Or they know that it would be political suicide for the MS Republicans to vote in mass to keep it. And if that’s true, which it also is, Republicans are not going to do that. There is ZERO scenario where MS Republicans vote in mass ON THE RECORD to keep the current flag.

Chris McDaniel is one of the few legislators who has come out AGAINST changing the flag. I liked him back when he ran for US Senate, but now I hope he never wins another election in this state.

I'm as conservative as they come and yet I don't know what it does for me to keep the stupid confederate battle flag in the State flag. I guess I just don't view this as a conservative or liberal issue unless you are a conservative that wants to somehow hold onto the notion of not being part of the United States.
