How many of you were happy with type of seasons Rutgers had under Greg before he left

Imagine if Flood had never become OC, the OL never collapses, and we had a senior Tom Savage in 2012 with GS as the coach....

I'm not sure Savage would have been at RU even with Schiano as HC. But recruiting was taking off, the program had recovered from the 2010 Eric LeGrand tragedy which had understandably tanked the season and they were going to a bowl.

People were, and still would be, complaining about the 1 "brain fart" game per year that always seemed to happen when Schiano was here, but I think there was consensus that the program was moving in the right direction. Besides, when do people in New Jersey NOT find something to complain about?

Tainted issue posed. More relevant is was the program stable and was it headed in a good direction

Answer to both yes.

It was a process... as he used to say but I was happy. A lot of people here wanted him fired because he couldn't win the Big East.

More choices are needed! I was complaining about some of his gameday coaching.
Perhaps significantly complaining vs mildly complaining.

I'll own it.

I said he couldn't coach out of wet paper bag and we needed someone else to get us to the next level. Great Jersey guy who was going to be the only guy to dig us out of the Shea era and he did it, but he couldn't get us over the hump. Over coached, micromanaged people to death.

Instead, he left on his own and we couldn't fill the void in time. Christabol said no, Pernetti panicked and hired a career position cosch.

We need GS back. He's no Scott Frost, but he's our Scott Frost. GS will get one more shot. So will he go to some middle of the road program in a Power 5 and do nothing (Rich Rod comes to mid at AZ) or will he cement his name in college football lore and raise RU twice in a lifetime?

But the 2011 team grossly underachieved and wound up dissapointing everyone with the pinstink bowl. Credit goes to greg for getting expectations that high that people were furious with that bowl game. Then it looked like he had the team set up for an epic 2012, and flood blew that.

As Moz said, I don't I complained about the result or status of the program, but did and do, firmly believe that GS had gone as far as he could at RU. Unless he is willing to bring in top notch OC and DC and be the recruiter, I for one, don't think it is a good idea to come back home.

OC I understand, but I don't see the need for a top DC.

Had GS stayed, that 2012 class would have had 3 more 4 stars including a great QB. But he left so that's that. Tim did have a HC but Barchi turned down the money so that was the end of that too.
Schiano will never come back if Barchi is at Rutgers. They're not the best of buddies.

Shocked, but then I was happy the class stayed together. Thought he plateud in his time here, and we had just done through the horrible offenses I n 2010 and 2011. No pass game, Savage/Dodd running the spread, Sanu getting destroyed on the wild knight. It was ugly. At the time it became a chance for a fresh start.

Lets just say that at the time, I thought discussions about extending his contract with a raise from his current salary were going to be interesting. I certainly agree that his last recruiting class did provide some hope that things would get better with the assist of the Pitt trio.

I complained but it was the same way fans complain about good teams with high expectations. Unfortunately, I would accept that level of play now over what I have been seeing.

I never drank the Kool-Aid, but grew to appreciate what he was able to do. However, as 2011 closed, I felt we reached as high as we could with him, and welcomed his move to Tampa. Once Flood was announced as the successor, I instantly felt impending doom.
Never thought I’d say this, but I would welcome him back 100%.

When Greg Schiano left I felt like my dog died.I had a bad feeling we were going to return to being a crappy football program.
That guy instilled a sense of pride in not only Rutgers football but Rutgers University as well.He got it!
That being said this is Chris Ashs reign Im rooting for him to turn this thing around.
Not looking good but ...

I was happy and hoping that Rutgers would find the next Brian Kelly or something. Why does it seem like Cincinnati always had a better coach than one of our best coaches in history.

I was complaining. But I also felt (and said) at the time that if we ever got in the Big 10, he'd own all of the recruits in NJ and that would be enough to make us Michigan State, even though I think he's a below average gameday coach.

He sure could have won more games here, but he made Rutgers better than most people thought RU could ever be.
The buzz was strongest around RU when he was here.
And his Florida connections resulted in a nice bunch of players here.
And apparently RU peaked with the big Louisville win.

I'm with you. Schiano's replacement is where we actually had the biggest opportunity to make the impact hire that could possibly take this program to the next level. And we gave the job to Kyle Flood. Then we actually got a mulligan and had a chance to still bring in a big time coach after 2013, when this was still a job that was coveted (going into the B1G, 8 out of previous 9 seasons .500 or better) and once again, we couldn't find the money to buy out Flood and bring in a legit staff despite there being legitimate interest in the job. Instead we threw lipstick on the pig, hired Fridge for a season, had a very good first season in the B1G all things considered because of Fridge.

Fridge goes back into retirement, Flood proceeds to set the program on fire and Ash throws gasoline on the fire every week he coaches a game. Now it's a job no one wants. Once again, we paid the price for going on the cheap with the football program. It will be a good 6-7 years until the program recovers from this mess, if not longer.

OMG- this again...how many times. He was given no OC responsibilities. It was a title and raise only. Even the OL recruiting...Though it was said it was 100% his responsibility, it wasn't. Greg only wanted Flood to be the only funnel of OL prospects to him. Flood made no decisions and Flood could only go after the types of kids Greg wanted.

But, to answer the OP. I was shocked when Greg left. I would have been happy if he stayed but not sure how much he was have grown the product on the field. While he was just bringing in his top class, that class also showed a part of his recruiting weakness. That class never came close to it's rating. And his classes from the few years earlier, were not all that great. And he had two things that helped him previously that is much more difficult now. He was able to go into Florida and find the hidden gems almsot as if we were a Fla team. Once they stopped those camps and once UCF/FAU/etc started to pick off those players, that pipeline never would have been the same. Also, he was able to get a lot of under the radar kids locally. He still didn't get the big stars on a consistent basis but he was able to find hidden gems and keep them hidden. In the new world of hudl/twitter etc...much harder to hide these kids.

And, he just isnt that great of a HC...just saying

A kid with Sitkowski's upside would do wonders with a HC like Fridge. That dude was a QB whisperer. Heck of a good coach.

He has admitted to the "over coaching and micro managing". It is a great start to recovery just as is an addict admitting to being one.IF he ever comes back I think that he could give this program a tremendous lift.

He's good but for a modern day offense and just youth.......Leach, his tree and that type of offense are ones I look to for qb whisperers. Kingsbury, Briles, Littrell, Dykes and others like Gundy....you see qbs change but the productivity usually stays constant for the most part. Kingsbury is playing a freshman Alan Bowman this year and he's a leading qb in the country thus far.

If Kingsbury whose seat is warm was ever got let go, I've said he'd make a great OC and should be an option here as HC should we need it. Just have a big budget for DC and a qualified candidate identified to fill the spot.

I'd take Schiano back as a DC in a heartbeat. :)

I just look at results. The OL was remarkably worse during 09-10 then it was before and after.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Flood put a bowl ring on every players finger? I was at the Quicklane Bowl at Ford Field.. I saw it. Ash can’t hold Floods jock strap.

The 09 OL was a tough one. We had 2 NFL bookends which may have been the best tandem in CFB that year. But, Blaze was hurt and sick all year. Played his heart out but was on the sideline throwing up between almost every series. Art was, well, Art. Not very good at all and that was ok with him. He played his best but even he laughed about his accolades, And Ruch was hurt and never improved much. The new offense threw them all off and having Sanu come in on the wildcat also fuxed them all up. Add in that they called Tom S the sack machine.
And with that said, all of those guys were so much further ahead in their technique and game IQ then anyone on our current OL.
and there was no doubt 10 would be bad. There was a lot of expectation on Art/Ruch/Stapleton (another who surprised the guys that he never improved) and then they put Howie at C and that was just strange. He had a few snaps at C in the Army game 09 and nt much else.

totally disagree on LeGrand leading to that season, that was on coach. Loads of teams have adversity and injury and death and don't crumble like that. That was GS sucking that year more than other years
