We like to refer to Tyus as "Stones", but we all know Coach K deserves that accolade as well for taking the USA job and excelling like no other could. G.O.A.T

First, it was an opportunity that was earned. He didn't buy it or have it handed to him by a family member, friend or college buddy. He was seen by others at the top of their field as a great fit based on his work history.
Second, it was a big risk. If he didn't win gold every time, he would have been labeled a failure by many, if not most. That would have hurt recruiting .
Third, he had to work harder. Much harder. The time commitment was huge. The time away from Duke was huge. And, he was jumping into to something very new/different from what he was used to. Basically, he had to work longer and harder while attempting something he had never done nefore while still needing to excel at his old job.
Fourth, he didn't just succeed, he knocked it out of the park! He did what others did not do, could not do, would not even try to do, and what many others would not risk doing, better and longer than anyone had ever done!
It was/is an advantage because K made it an advantage. Probably one of the fairest, most well earned advantages in sports.

THIS x100. And this is exactly why it blew up in Coach Cal's face (or better yet RJ Barret blew up and dropped 38 to manhandle Coach Cal's u19 team). You cannot deny that since coaching the USA U19 team coach Cal has lost his recruiting edge. It's one thing for a coach to sit in your home and promise you the world and another thing to play for him and realize he does not know X's and O's and is not that great to play for (also 2015).

Coach K took the opportunity and, get this, won over and over. Guys playing for him during this era loved it and recognized how great of a coach he was.

Same opportunity, two very different results.

There's nothing unfair about taking advantage of legitimate opportunities.

OFC
The only, real unfair advantage that Coach K has is success. His coaching Team USA would not give him any so called advantage unless he won. Calipari was given a similiar opportunity when he lost to Canada in the U19 tourney. Everyone thinks its easy until they have to do it. And for those who are really interested, check the stats...K coached some bronze winners as well.

As has been pointed out before, Coaching Team USA did not provide Coach K with the day-to-day interactions as some other coaches (like Donovan, Dixon, Miller) on the U16, U17, U18, U19 teams. By the time a kid gets on a national team, they are pretty well recruited up.

It’s funny how idiotic rival fans discount the years from 2006-2009 when Coach K spent the majority of his summers away from his Duke team to coach Team USA. Surely those same fans enjoyed the early exits from Duke in the NCAA Tournament in 2007, 2008, and 2009, but now all of a sudden Coach K’s time coaching Team USA is an advantage hahahaha you can’t fix stupid.

Yea it can get scarier. We just need Dwayne Wade to say the same thing about his son. Lebron and Dwayne are good friends!

I agree with him, maybe Coach K should take a step back from team USA, that way he can focus on recruiting, is that what they want.

Oh wait, then he lands the 1,2, and 3 recruits because he has more time.......

Just sayin, good luck with that!

What is funny...from the time K took the gig (2006 right?) up until we started to consistently land a top 5 guy (2011ish), Duke fans saw his Team USA gig as a burden to Duke, or at least I did.

2007, 2008, and 2009 were the dark days: lack of elite talent, early tournament exits etc.

And let's not forget how Ks success with the Olympics and his success with NBA stars blew up so much of the negative recruiting against K and Duke that was standard fare. Not just Kobe and Lebron who never went to college and never were going to be faced with a college choice, but guys like Chris Paul saying how they never considered K/Duke as a collegiate option but totally changed their minds after playing for him. The Olympics totally changed the perception of K and Duke in the minds of many recruits which made negative recruiting against Duke much more difficult.
