Latest Stephen Smith argument here

The argument that it is unfair to the rest of the NCAA that K coached the USA squad is one that always seems to lack complete evidence and logic.

Calipari coaching the U19 seems to have done more harm to UK recruiting than helped.

Billy Donavan's roll on the USA team was never decried as unfair for Florida.

Jim Boheim as an assistant was never cried as unfair for Syracuse

Recruits don't come to Duke "because" K coached the National team. They come because of his great basketball coaching skills at Duke that led to him becoming the National coach. This skill is recognized and praised by those who played for him in college and team USA. If being a great coach is unfair, well then so be it.

Ehh.. who cares, K coaching Team USA has been the excuse for all our rival fans since we landed Kyrie.

The fact that Stephen A. Smith (who admittedly hates talking about college sports because he claims the NCAA is the biggest scam in all of sports) is talking about Duke basketball, should tell us all we need to know.

Duke, KD/Draymond, and Lebron are the 3 biggest stories in basketball...in that order.

As long as I remember growing up, my parents instilled things in us about hate or jealousy. One is, it's never a good thing to hate anybody regardless of the reason you think you may have, and never be jealous of what somebody else has, but be thankful for what you have been blessed with.
When I look at these jackasses that try and find the least little thing to hate on or complain about Duke or K, it just brings up those great memories. But now as I have grown older and maybe wiser, just depends, they never said anything about not laughing at the idiots when it's called for. This is clearly one of those moments when all I can do is laugh at some of the idiotic comments that comes with Duke.
I'm just constantly appalled that these idiots actually get paid a nice check for being dumb. If Steven A. Smith cared or payed as much attention to his hairline as he has trying to talk about K and his unfair advantages, then he would know both are a lost cause.

To be honest, I’ve never understood the argument. Coach K landed the Team USA job because he is well respected across the board. He earned that job and every other coach is free to fight for the same position. If that comes with a recruiting advantage so be it. Is it an advantage when Nick Saban walks into the living room of a 5-star from Alabama? Is it an advantage when Oregon presents a recruit with the latest Neon Green Nike gear? Recruiting is all about gaining advantages to land the best athletes. Unless K did something illegal to land the job or keep it, I’m completely confused why it is an unfair advantage.

Just another indicator that K is the most powerful man in college basketball. The gap between him and the next coach is huge. He gives all these talking heads, and the other fan bases, something to talk, whine, fuss, and cuss about. I love it.
He is a freaking legend. I get mad at him quite often, call him bull headed, and other names, but in all seriousness, we are the luckiest fan base.

But along with being the most popular, we are also one of the most despised. We have to take the good with the bad. (all of these trolls)

Ironically, the first 4 or so years Coach K was involved with the USA program a lot of people felt he didn't have time to focus on recruiting and it was hurting Duke. We can't win.

Great point! In fact, it did hurt Duke’s recruiting. The gains since then balance out his sacrifice

I thought there was a story (rumor) that when USA basketball was looking for a coach, Dean Smith said they needed to hire K. If this story is true, then Stephen A. needs to blame Dean. Which brings me to my next point, it's always Carolina's fault for most of this stuff anyway.

Hold still, but I don't totally disagree with Stephen A. Coach K coaching Team USA has certainly amounted to an advantage for him, Duke and the Duke brand. I'm not sure how one can argue otherwise.

As has been pointed out above, though, it wasn't always this rosy. A dozen years ago UNC fans were begging for K to do it as long as he likes, because they felt it was ultimately taking time away for his real job. Now that they, and the rest of the college basketball world, for that matter, have seen it has been an advantage, they're crying foul.

Coach K has the respect of the basketball world. Notice....I didn't say college or even American, I said the whole damn world. It's the truth. Regardless of what people say or make up about him, he's on an island all by his lonesome. He's the best of all-time. And when you see NBA superstars tweeting at him and showing him love, it draws a collective moan from his detractors....which, might I add, are mostly folks who have never met him or know anything about him. It's just stuff they've built up in their heads. They know he's the best, too.

To all of those people I just mentioned.....picture me right now giving you the #1 sign with my middle finger.

Did Coach K gain an advantage from coaching the national team? Yes. But where did the root of that advantage actually come from? It came from him being - wait for it.....the best coach in the game! Without that, he wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to begin with. Coaching Team USA didn't make him the GOAT. Being the GOAT is what lead to him coaching Team USA. So basically when people complain about this, they're really complaining about excellence at multiple levels being rewarded on multiple levels. I have no time for that.

With jealously comes hate. With hate comes illogical thinking to fit ones agenda. Advantage, yes. Unfair advantage, why?

Stephen A. Smith has built his career getting a rise out of people. That'said what keeps him doing and saying the things he says. If he reads this thread he is happy. Mission accomplished. OFC

K coaching Team USA obviously gives him/the program and advantage over other programs. But doing well puts you in better situations, so cry me a river, SAS.

If we had a Team USA for football, people would be saying that it wasn't fair if Coach Saban was coaching them. Winning creates jealousy, let the haters hate while we enjoy the G.O.A.T.

Stephen A Smith and Jalen Rose are both drowning but you only have one life vest to throw. Who do you throw it to?
I would check my shoes to see if I needed to tie them, check my phone for any missed calls, make sure I wasn't dehydrated, inspect the life vest, stretch real good, loosen up my arm, check direction of the wind, flip a coin (best out of a hundred), and then throw the vest to the winner of the coin flip. I think that would be the fair way to do it.

Maybe before the coin flip, you could ask both of them to tell you a little something about themselves from the time they graduated high school. Flip a coin to see who goes first.

No thanks, I think we've all heard enough bull crap stories from both of them.

First, it was an opportunity that was earned. He didn't buy it or have it handed to him by a family member, friend or college buddy. He was seen by others at the top of their field as a great fit based on his work history.
Second, it was a big risk. If he didn't win gold every time, he would have been labeled a failure by many, if not most. That would have hurt recruiting .
Third, he had to work harder. Much harder. The time commitment was huge. The time away from Duke was huge. And, he was jumping into to something very new/different from what he was used to. Basically, he had to work longer and harder while attempting something he had never done nefore while still needing to excel at his old job.
Fourth, he didn't just succeed, he knocked it out of the park! He did what others did not do, could not do, would not even try to do, and what many others would not risk doing, better and longer than anyone had ever done!
It was/is an advantage because K made it an advantage. Probably one of the fairest, most well earned advantages in sports.

Exactly. You, @dukiejay, and @Neners nailed it. He created the advantage because he earned it. Plain and simple.

No one, and I mean no one in the NBA world wanted that job. Look at what happened to Larry Brown. No one wanted that position. Colangelo was the mastermind behind a brilliant concept and went the college route to get a coach who was brilliant in getting people to buy in. Again, no one in the NBA wanted that position. K did and the rest is history.

In reality, the biggest advantage it gave Duke is scratching the itch to coach NBA players. Since 2006, there’s been no worry that K would skip to the pros.

So yes, the advantage has absolutely been his exposure. He has KD and LeBron on speed dial for recruits and players to talk to. But as everyone has mentioned, he earned the right and I dare any other fan base to say their coach shouldn’t have done the same thing if offered.
