One player always get picked by the majority to be the whipping boy. Unfortunately for Wheeler it’s going to be 2 years in a row.
He’s got to shoot better. That’s it. I love the dude. But he didn’t look great tonight. Hopefully just some competitive rust.

I was disappointed that he hasn't shown more growth in the off season. So far tonight is still doing the same bs he was doing last year. Out of control, dribbling into traps, making bad decisions and turning the ball over, doesn't shoot much better.

The pick thing bothers me too. If you get cracked on a pick of two then it is probably your teammates fault, but when it happens as much as it does to him then it is a wheeler problem. It is just odd.

Wallace is too good to keep off the floor. Wheeler is just too limited. It was evident last week in the scrimmage as it was last season. Pg is too important a spot to try and hide a guy

Wheeler has got to just play his game and stop trying to force it.

Not once did we look at Cason tonight and go, “That looked really forced.”

Wheeler needs to go with the flow and play smart. Hit a few open shots. Will be a huge asset if he does.
I agree!

I get people not wanting to be negative, but it’s simply reality. This team has championship potential, so long as Wallace gets the majority of the PG play. Wheeler would be fine off the bench.
The buzz was, what, Wheeler wouldn't return if he didn't have a starting role? Not sure if there was truth to those rumors. I'm just assuming he will be starting most, if not all, games. I do hope we see Wallace get a ton of minutes at PG though and pair him with Reeves and Livingston a lot to see what the team can do with that lineup in case we need to move more minutes away from Wheeler.

Wheeler was a huge reason we lost last year and he will be the downfall again. He should play spot duty backup pg. But Cal loves him and he is the team pet. Wallace should play pg with Reeves, Livingston and Frederick on wings shooting. Wheeler wouldn’t play much for a lot of SEC teams.
Now, THAT would be a fun shooting lineup to see. Lots of shooters to spread the floor and have Oscar down low to clean up any rebounds. I just can't imagine Cal is going to play a lot of minutes without Oscar and one of Toppin or Collins on the floor.

Moron . You’re basing this off a scrimmage against bad talent

Let's not give anyone too much crap for this trip....but I stated what friend and others who are close with Cal stated. If this team is going to be the team we all think it can be come Postseason....he'll be adjusting to a different role and think it can be really positive for him.

My own take on him as a PG and if you disagree, that's fine but I can't stand when Wheeler's facing pressure as the initial receiver/point/press break.. He gets timid/nervous and his lack of size leads to not seeing and turnovers or potential turnovers. I loved how they showed an adjustment at one point in game with him near midcourt --and he was 3rd handler and got it and attacked. Stuff like that is adjustment.

Think it's also glaring that when a guy who was so relied on with TyTy as the 2 playmakers has others surrounding them with skill. Biggest improvement I saw tonight was skilled plays from several players (loved the drop one more passes, the ball handling off the glass, etc...).
Sahvir just has to get used to pushing with the pass more and knowing he's got teammates who can be play creators/starters too, not just him. That's why this trip is helpful.

I saw enough last year
I mean, he only lead the league in assists last 2 seasons. He's earned the right to make it 3. Is that the best option? Well we'll find out. He has to shoot better. But I'm not booting him for an inexperienced player after ONE exhibition game. Yikes

Regarding "flow"....one challenge not discussed much is that Wheeler is a ball dominant player since his game is pretty much all about penetration. Yes he can create some assist numbers but the flow of the offense can turn into watching him poke around with the ball. Yes, very limited to base this opinion on from one exhibition but I liked the way the ball moved with CJ, Reeves, and Wallace. We have 5 very accomplished options for the perimeter, saying one of those guys is better off the bench than being the primary ballhandler and offensive cornerstone is not bashing.

So I need to understand the new rules of Rupp's Rafters.
Are we allowed to discuss players and this team or not?

Only when they look good? How does it work? Asking for a friend.

With that said, Wheeler still can't shoot a lick.

Yep. Nothing wrong with realizing it, either. Wallace is better on both ends & you’d have to sit him or Reeves to make room for Wheeler. I’ve said it all summer, but, we’d be best served with Wheeler coming off the bench as an energy guy. He does some good things & he’s not a BAD player. But, Wallace & our wings are just better players, with fewer limitations & offer much more on both ends. Some fans would sacrifice having the best team possible on the floor in order to spare certain players’ feelings, though.
Your last sentence makes zero sense. Do the wishes or statements of fans affect who plays? A post here doesn’t hurt the players feelings or change who Cal plays.
