That was garbage basketball for the last 9 or so minutes by Iowa. Just 0 effort on either end and they are lucky USC went stupid on that last foul.
I’d say last 6 and change. That loss would have been brutal. Not only that this will be a good resume win end of year so we almost blew a good quality victory come March.

Different way than women’s last week at Maryland but almost 2 epic meltdowns up 17 that were barely avoided.

Okay, I missed most of the game. I got to see is be up by 15 then USC cut it to 5.

I saw some... interesting (soft) calls and a lot of and 1 opportunities.
A- were the officials like this all night?
B- why did we not attack more if they were?
C- why the major collapse in the under 4 TO?

A - No. First half they allowed a lot of physicality and Iowa was only whistled for 4 fouls in the first half. (Musselman cried like a baby to Katz about it) Almost a complete 180 by the refs after halfitme on how they called the game, just as I predicted would happen.

B - Because it wasn't called the same way on both ends. A foul on Iowa at one end was a play on for USC at the other.

C - Woods. Dude had a career night. Scored 25 points all season coming in, and put up 33(?) tonight and ~20 of those were in the last 10 minutes of the game. First two made 3s on the year both in that same 10 minute stretch.

Has there ever been a time when an Iowa player exceeded his entire season point total in one game off the bench deep into the season? This example was pretty off the wall scoring 30+, but holy hell it seems like about every season and a half someone does something similar. And an Iowa player has basically never done that in my lifetime, lol.

David Palmer in 2009 had 17 total points on the season coming into the Purdue game on 1/19/2009.

Palmer put up 19 against Purdue to lead them to a 22 point loss against the 19th ranked Boilermakers. The next game Palmer added 21 points to help the Hawks win over Wisconsin in OT.

Iowa was called for six consecutive fouls to start the second half before USC was whistled for their first.

Iowa had two more fouls called on them in the first 3:30 of the second half then they had called against them in the entire 20:00 of the first half.

I stand corrected. I forgot about the even existence of David Palmer. I remember the name but I had to review history to catch myself up. So those two games were basically half his career total at Iowa. Why those two games only? It seems he disappeared again after that and transferred.

It was 7. USC was in the bonus before the under 16 and hadn’t been called for a single foul. We were whistled for a total of 16 second half fouls. You have to try as a ref to make it that lopsided to start a half.

Are you sure it wasn’t a 30 foul game?
Lol, no it was against Michigan State @ CHA when he was a JR(?)... the next game he fouled out before the 1st media timeout in the 2nd half, what a frustrating player but darn he had some potential, coaching had to of killed his progression...

To be fair, I think Iowa was given a lot of leeway in the first half on the defensive end.

It just never should have swung as hard the other way as it did.

The refs started the 2nd half with their minds made up that given even the slightest opportunity, they were calling Iowa for something.
And that is why I do not understand officials. Just call the game like you see it quit trying to control game/foul count. It truly felt like they huddled with Mussleman at half-time after his TV interview.

Hopefully BM uses it as a teaching moment.
Can't let your foot off the gas on anyone in the B1G. That being said, I swear we must lead the nation in allowing complete question mark players(Woods) to go off on career nights! Damn I have seen that too many times in the last 20 years. Guy was flat out cooking in that last 10 minutes.

I was there and I can’t remember seeing a game like that. Early on my brother was saying “let’s go to the vine…we did not come to play”. When we went up 17 in the second half he said “let’s go to the Vine to celebrate”. Crazy stuff.
The refs were SO inconsistent. The beginning of the second half was a joke. All I can say is we got the W and Ben has plenty of stuff for the guys to work on. Also, SC has talent… a real good coach and they could be super dangerous. Hope they knock off some teams down the stretch.

It's the Tom Davis curse...we would sit in that 2-3 zone and some random dude off the bench would suddenly get white hot and hit 7 3's vs. Iowa...only to vanquish from the earth the next day and for the rest of the season.

LOL. I've been waiting for ONE game like that for, well, let's just say a long, long time. I ain't seen it yet, and I never expect to. When it comes to the officiating, Iowa has never had a home court advantage that I can remember. But I do remember things like Mark Gannon being called for a phantom foul--video and photos prove it--on a 40-foot heave by a Minny player at the end of a third OT with the game still tied. Minny made the FT with no time on the clock and stole the win in the waning days of the old Field House. Just one of the most egregious of an untold number of examples.

I’m sure a lot of us myself included expected that last shot by USC no matter where it was from to go in.

I would have bet the farm…🐷🐐🐓🐖
Considering that USC’s missed last second shot was the only defensive “stop” for Iowa since CBM missed a jumper at the 5:59 mark (Iowa’s final defensive rebound of the game), it sure seemed that way.

They looked awful from about the 8:00 mark to the end. Happy with the win, but very disappointing to see a BMac team play like that and almost blow a huge lead. I just hope all the players and coaches learned something…

I might be mistaken here but Palmer was a guy Alford brought in before departing for New Mexico. Palmer never got a chance to play for Alford just red shirted a year during his transfer. Then Palmer got Lick’d like the rest of us. Palmer definitely didn’t fit Lickliter’s style and already lost a year/red shirt transferring.
