Jo Mo years, plus Covid, plus underwhelming offensive performances and struggles last year. You want to get buts in the seats, have to keep up the exciting defense but really need to light up the score board with offense. Not to mention cost of gas is going up and cost of hotels etc. tickets haven't really gone down either. Lot easier for people to just stay home watch on TV and watch a bunch of games. People got comfortable on the couch.
In my opinion, this is the primary reason why people do not attend football games on campus . . . because they can watch it on television.
Right off the top of my head, without even really thinking about it, here are some advantages to watching at home rather than attending in person:
- no travel of any kind is involved
- any sort of snacks/food is at your fingertips
- drink all you want
- better views of the game (depending on where you sit inside the stadium)
- temperature is controllable
- no rain, hail, heat, cold, wind or sun issues
- bathroom is only steps away and always available
- much less expensive than attending in-person
Here are some disadvantages about watching at home:
- can't walk on campus and reminisce
- no "campus football game" atmosphere
- can't visit family/friends who are also attending
I live in northern Virginia (35 miles outside Washington DC), so I attend one game per season. I also visit family/friends in Mississippi while I'm there. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't attend any campus football games.
The advantages listed above do not involve the virus, so they will always be available moving forward.
Really, as I see it, the main question is this: is the experience of being on campus in person for the football game worth it?
