My Dad came up to see me for a quick visit shortly after the arena opened. I found a couple of tickets and we went to a game. I think it was Miss St, but it's been 47 years and I can't be sure. Dad was one of the student managers back in the late 30s but hadn't been to a game since he graduated.

It's still the only regular season game I've been to at Rupp. Went all the time to games in Memorial when you could just walk in with a student id. Even for the Tennessee game.

For non-sports it was the Oak Ridge Boys in February of 1982. For sports it was the entire 1982 Boys Sweet Sixteen, culminating with Laurel County's Paul Andrews making the championship-winning basket from beyond half-court to beat North Hardin 53-51. When people talk about the shot nowadays they estimate it was anywhere between 55 and 5,000 feet long. What was your first Rupp Arena experiences, both sports and non-sports?
Wall and Cousins. Don’t remember the exact year, but took my daughter. She was so into UK basketball as a young teenager. Now, like me, she’d rather gig frogs. I kinda like that. Shove it Cal.

my first experience with the team in general was at the Owensboro Sports Center for the blue white game for the 91/92 season. After the game people got to walk on the court to get autographs. I got all the seniors autographs. Quite thrilled as a child.

They don't let you do that anymore.

December 1976. Don't remember who the opponent was. I was doing my clinical rotations in Eastern Ky and drove in to see one of the first games in Rupp. Givens, Lee et al. (I believe opponent was Bowling Green) We won of course. I graduated that month and could never seem to find the time to get back to Rupp. Finally made it one last time before moving to Florida. I was overwhelmed at the massive size of the facility. It was a bleary eyed grand rounds next morning, I prefer to remember my last game in Memorial. March 1976 against Miss St. Overtime win 94-93. Best memory was James Lee decking the Miss St player (Gary Hooker) after a hard foul on Marion Haskins. Refs turned their backs and Lee connected with the purest left jab I've ever seen,

Attended a game vs Miss State in Feb 1986. I was attending one of the UK community colleges and was going to attend UK in the fall. We were actually able to get our tickets through the community college by requesting them a couple weeks in advance. There was about 10-12 inches of snow on the ground from the day before. UK won bigly, and was blown away by the arena and game experience.

First non-sport event at Rupp was the Genesis concert in February (?) 1987.

I was arrested by a guy impersonating a cop.
Well he was just tryin to ensure every individual was safe while enjoying the experience. He was just doing his part... nobody even has to ask him, he just took it upon himself to give bus escorts, stop speeding cars, park cars, and make arrests and what does he get in return for it? Not even a thanks and they even made him take his Red 🚨 light down! He put his life on the line and he done it like BCG without a contract. 😂

Attended the 96 vs 98 Night of Champions game, final Score was 142-142. Joe B coached the 96 team, Tubby the 98. Last game at Memorial was Rupps last.

Technically not Rupp.. but when I was 6 or 7? I went to my first “game” with my Dad. We were supposed to meet the guy in the lobby of the attached hotel to buy tickets. He never showed, so we rode the elevator up and down for almost an hour straight, just stepping out every few minutes to try to call the ticket man. I had so much fun on that elevator and as sad as my dad was to miss the game, he enjoyed the quality time with me

First game at Rupp was actually a KHSAA SW16 games....First UK game waas versus Tenn....Most memorable was game vs Penn----memorable b/c it was first time me and my brother ever attended a UK game together.

Mot memorable runner-up ws when wife and I attended UK/Vandy. Jorts Senior night. Cats were up big, but Vandy came roaring back, and had a chance at the end to win; they missed. And thank GOD. During one of the "Cats-Cats-Cats" cheers, one of the fans yelled at me to, "get into man!!"---My wife, innocently says---"He's an Indiana fan"----Gulp. Brother it got quiet, and it felt like all 24,000 were looking at me....Needless to say when Vandy missed, there was absolutely NO ONE in the building happier than me.....

Best concert was Garth Brooks.

You’re going to have to elaborate. Is it still operational? What does the good doctor do with it? I’d probably practice doing player intros. Where does the doctor store it?
That's what he uses Bertha for is to call his patients back from the waiting room! Like says "now checking into the lineup
is Bambi Johnson come on back to room #1 let's get your weight, blood pressure and temperature." All he needs is to hire Doug Bruce to do his job."

Man I would've love those Crispin brothers if they put on a display like that anywhere except they just had to do it in Lexington! Those 2 lit UK up and I think they had one other guy who had like 8-10 points but aside from that it was 3 on 5 and they just spanked us. always wondered what it must've been like that in Rupp that night. Now I gotta go over and look at the box score because I may be remembering this wrong.

1976 or 77, it was Larry Johnson's senior year. I was fourteen and remember that they played "Rubberband Man" during the warmups and I thought that was hip/cool. LOL

Late 70's at the UKIT. Two guys in front of me almost fought because one of them was smoking beside him.

Thanks for pulling this up for me. I started to Google it after my comments and then I got on to something else. I wanted to see that though. I wish I hadn't had to see that game though lol.
You're welcome. I enjoy going to Jon Scott's site and looking through all of the history. I remember feeling shocked after that game. As it turned out, Penn State was actually good that season, advancing to the round of 16. I enjoyed when they beat North Carolina in the 2nd round that season.

Yeah I enjoy that site as well. It's amazing and probably my most visited site from this phone. I get all these random thoughts daily and bam over to BBH I go. I done been back there twice today to see how many assists the Crispin's had and then once again to check out how Saul fared against PSU 🙆🤦💆. I can't help it that my life is just full of excitement or that my head is running wild with all these important things I wonder about 😂 so more than likeky I'll be back on there later tonight to see how many mins. Chris Harrison played against EKU one yr. lol or something very random. The best part is as a fan we don't never have to go far for the answers thanks to that guy.

First game ever played there. My Soph year at UK. Could not believe how big that thing was. (Yes, that is what she said) It did lose the intimacy of Memorial Coliseum.
Lot bigger than my HS gym!
