Not retired. Close enough to feel comfortable saying it will be there.

1) be okay with programs such as "housing & food subsidies and Medicare" but 2) also believe those programs have gotten out of control and need to be reeled back in.

You should hate social security. You could have ended up with wayyyy more money investing those contributions yourself than what you'll be getting (if anything) once you retire.

You know that the stock market is heavily socialized since before the pandemic. The policy of quantitative easing basically makes it impossible for the market to ever crash again, and that is on the backs of the taxpayer. So when people make money off of the market, a share of this share is actually a tax payer infusion to help maintain liquidity. It was decided that small, consistent infusions of tax dollars are better than bailing out corporations every time the market crashes and liability comes due. The role of socialsim in a competitive capitalist state to to let the government control situations to create market stability...clean water, electricity, protection, national security. If the market has to worry about these things it becomes unstable. Then let capitalists provide us with 150 types of donuts, and they fight with each other to keep prices down. In theory.

Most of the above is not the job of the government, and the government should not be spending other people's money on any of it. Most of it makes things worse, not better.

A few others (military, prisons etc) are not socialism, they are pure public goods which the free market dictates is a necessity of government. Free market does not mean zero govt. It means the govt stays out of the market when the market can provide the good or service. Pure public goods are not socialism.

Public goods would be need to be produced services if government didn't do it...so yes, any government service is a means of production being managed by a public entity. Private security services are a produced good, Clean water" would be a produced good, electricity is a produced good, education is a produced good. All public goods are considered "production" controlled by the state, which is the definition of socialism. Safety, water, electricity, transportation routes, education are all produced services provided for by the state. I think America has a successful balance, an ever evolving conflict between competitive innovation and public good. We actually might be seeing the rise of corpo-states where these large corporations destroy competition and their board of directors effectively become no different than the directors in soviet russia or china, whose decisions are made solely for the good of the board and any competition is removed in a violent manner. The good of customers, or consumer matters not just the shareholders who increasingly become fewer people. That is the end game of communism/socialism and probably capitalism.

An idea thought up in the inexperienced mind of educated youths who didn't want to be the slaves of industry at a time where it was becoming possible to not be slaves. In practice it is a group of elected officials using tax dollars to preempt a disaster that would cost more to fix or to create stability that can allow a market economy to flourish.

If Jo smo had to worry about cleaning his own water, or providing electricity for himself it would be more difficult to open a shop selling screw drivers...if Jo smo also had to police his own shop day and night, and educate his own workers it would be even harder. We prop up the stock market with tax dollars, and we provide food, and health care to poor people for the same reason. It is better to prempt violence and collapse than have to pay for a rebuild of the system. That is the idea. Some people think it is better to starve people, let them die of treatable diseases, let the market crash, and keep humans uneducated. They might be right.
