They are literally talking about how the higher humidity in Starkville will help the ball fly further, lol!
friggin nerds!

This is actually true. Humidity displaces some of the heavier nitrogen atoms, making for slightly "thinner" air. But yes, this is geek **** and the overall effect is negligible

I like the one Stanford fan's comment:

"Stanford was 21-4 away from home this year. (State) will not have a home field advantage."

I think that sometimes we tend to over-value home field advantage, but even still, that might be the dumbest thing ever stated on a message board. Stanford didn't play in an atmosphere and in front of as many people as they are going to see this weekend. It will be overwhelming for them, at least initially.

Some of them are suggesting they concede the Friday game by throwing their 3.

Stanford played SIX 17ing games against top 50 RPI opponents on the road, so that 21-4 road record was compiled against the little sisters of the poor. Those 6 games were against #37 Arizona State & #34 Cal. For comparison purposes MSU played 15 road games against top 50 RPI opponents - all of which were against top 30 RPI teams (3 each at Florida, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, & Texas A & M).

A few went so far as to say the team is well-prepared to play in a hostile environment after dealing with all the Fresno State fans. Overall, smart bunch but the fan base is unaware of what they are walking into.

Almost wish we could save that homefield shock for game 2. They couldn't hit

Small if the game was played on the moon.

The combined attendance of all of their victories on the road will probably not be equal to what they see in one game on Saturday

Attendance numbers for the only 6 relevant Stanford road games @ Arizona State (2681, 3470, & 2801) and @ Cal (1245, 1730, & 1031) per the Stanford Athletics website

Oh oh I have no doubt it is true. It’s just hilarious to see them spelling out the scientific data behind it for the purposes of this game. Living up to that Stanford name!

I have to think that any advantage provided by "thinner" air would be more than offset by the fact that they can't swing their bats as fast. Because, you know, it will be really hot and humid.

It's not a direct comparison, but I have always found my golf balls do not fly as far on really humid days. Golf balls utilize lift from spin a lot more than baseballs do, so maybe they are effected differently. Or maybe my observations are just bogus, and it is my swing that is effected by the humidity moreso than the the ball flight. It is impossible for me to do a side by side comparison of my own swing on a humid day vs. an identical swing on a less humid day. I just have the anecdotal observation that on humid days I need to alter my distance expectations.

If you're gonna, "go geek" on them, need to change the "effected" to "affected". Otherwise, love your post. ;)

On the Miami board, they had some knowledgeable fans. Only one I saw saying that we wouldn't have a huge home field advantage. One guy though kept telling him, we probably have the best home field advantage in the nation, but maybe Alex Box and Baum are comparable.

They have no idea. Their players will love it though. They will have n ever played in front of this many people in their lives.

The Mississippi heat and humidity may well be an unexpected surprise. This may be an addition to the home field advantage.

i hope it pours for about an hour, then the brightest sunshine prior to first pitch. lets see what some west coast, tree hugging P***ies do with that kind of humidity. they may all pass out. they better have a safe space in their dugout lined off

If it is true, I've always noticed the opposite effect. But certainly we can talk ourselves into whatever we want to believe. I would think that drier air would offer less resistance to the ball as one should notice the ball doesnt travel as well at night as it does during the day when the sun is shining.

There is another factor. Their field is orientated with the beach on a line behind home plate similar to ours. That should obviously produce wind that blows out to center most of the time.

Dudy Noble is home plate in the south and the left field line going almost directly north. Winds come in from the North east and blow across to the right field foul line. Balls die in that cross wind quite a bit. The new park has given some of that back with wind not swirling so badly at home plate. Butch Thompson told me before he left that was the reason Dudy was such a pitchers park in the past. He also said that it was about to go to being more of a hitters park.

You thought they were sciencing it up then, go back to that thread and you'll read about the viscosity of the humid air, and you'll get NASA data to boost the argument. I was afraid to ask what the dude made on the science section of the SAT.

Agree, seems like good folks, but they wouldn't know what to do with a batch of tater tots if we put them on a periodical table for them.

Without reading their thread, mostly because I'm lazy, are they implying that they will have the advantage because the humidity will automatically drop each time one our guys enters the batter's box?

If it were ninety degrees out it would be a bigger factor since warmer air is less dense, but it will be fairly cool (80ish down into the 60s).

The real question is if we'll get our games done by Tuesday

The last time I got all excited about the heat/humidity helping us beat a west coast team I believe was Oregon in football circa 2003. We best better play solid baseball and forget the heat....cause it ain't gonna affect ****. Now get off my lawn **

I don't have time to deal with this. Someone please download the Hit modeler app and let us know if increasing the humidity will assist the ball flight.

Humidity factor sounds kind of like a defensive mechanism and probably won't be the difference in winning or losing. Stanford has a lot of baseball tradition and pride. That will probably matter more

Well, to be fair, of the 200 fresno state fans, 50 of them are convicts and might knife you. There will be 12,000 State fans but basically 0% chance that any of them would commit violence against their players.
