Let’s clear something up to avoid all the confusion when deciding potential Final Four contenders: Defense alone is not going to win a championship.

The game of basketball has changed. Most notably, the rule emphasis changed so those handchecks and elbows that once upon a time limited free movement are no longer going to help offensively challenged teams in a big way, as both No. 10 Louisville and No. 19 West Virginia demonstrated Friday. The game belongs to the scorers now.

The point of this thread was to find out if people think there is much merit to the point that the writer of the article made.

And I have been plenty critical of Dana Holgorsen for having difficulty at recruiting a QB. Not so much this year, but the last two seasons I regularly expressed my puzzlement over that issue.

Why not this year? Our two biggest games (OK State, OU) were BIG TIME FLOPS.......

.....just admit it, you hate Huggs....and cannot stand the success he has brought and the steadiness of the program. It's OK....admit it. [thumbsup]

I think the author took a single event setting and turned it into an op ed challenging the game plans of two hall of fame coaches who have won an average of probably 26 games over the last two seasons employing their defensive strategies

I understand what you are saying. But then does this mean that you disagree with him when he says the game (and its championships) now belong to the scorers?

I would love to see another deep tourney run. But if what this guy says is true, and I don't know that it is true, then we probably don't see it happening ... unless, of course, we become much more efficient on offense ourselves.

We'll just have to wait and see if this guy is making an isolated observation or if he is really on to something.

In any event, Fran Dunphy (great coach) had his guys ready to play some basketball.

Steadiness in the basketball program is something we have had the last couple of years ... may it continue.

I would admit to hating Huggs but I would be lying if I said so. I have absolutely hated the circus nature that sometimes accompanies his programs. But I would be happy for him to finish his career at WVU and the only real drama occur on the court with some more great NCAA wins.

First, these guys have to publish something ... anything, unencumbered by facts or reason. Truth be told, one early season game won by a narrow margin proves nothing at all about either team.

If the first half, failure to execute the defense lead to a 20 point deficit. In the second half, executing the defense lead to a complete comeback and opportunity for victory.

WVU has a fairly young team that should get significantly better as this season progresses. I'm looking forward to see it happen.

I consider 2015's Sweet 16 run a deep run

Dax Miles' words had no impact towards the outcome of that game. We were Never beating UK. Did his words make it worse on us? Yes, but that UK team was the single worst matchup for PressVirginia in the entire field

My only happiness was I was flying across the Atlantic at the time and couldn't watch it

I wrote for an online publication a few years ago and I can tell you that it is absolutely true. I left after they put a guy on in my same space that could barely write in English. I criticized that move to the editor and was pressured until I gave it up. Fill the page and get clicks to justify the advertisers payout was all it was.

I understand .... but I think he does raise a legitimate question by suggesting that basketball teams who make their living by playing defense to the point of minimizing offensive effectiveness won't win championships.

FWIW from my observation including some statistical observation, we tend to lose 2 to 3 winnable games a year due to poor free throw shooting, including Temple this year. This has been a ongoing problem for several years with different lineups and is puzzling from a coaching standpoint. This corrected alone in my humble opinion could make the difference without much offensive improvement between a top 10 team and somewhere lower teens which would effect our tournament seeding and possibly Big 12 finish.

basketball has turned into a sissy sport, I could have told you that few years ago. It's flirting with European soccer when it comes to fragile softness. NBA is a damn joke too. They are super soft, always wanting a foul. Basketball use to be a sport that I loved to watch. Now, I mostly just watch hockey and whenever WVU plays in the winter time. Almost never watch any other teams play. Like last week with all of those big tournaments, I didn't watch a single game.

I guess it depends on how far back you go. Was basically a non contact sport.
