What made this WR transformation so fluid?

It’s obvious we have something very special and we should covet CML..but Jezum Pete’s ....Ol Ball Coach Jr must be an out of a this world coach as well.

The footwork, separation, routes, catching technique, sound fundamentals.....and very few drops....

Let’s not pretend he’s throwing to the 90’sRams WR’s here...we talking 2 JR transfers, some rs freshman, Austin W and Some guys who caught the same amount of balls as leach, entering the game. OBCjr deserves all the praise he receives

KJ throwing absolute dimes up the side line and across the middle....Our receivers from last year never had that type of green space.

But what’s the biggest difference in to why JoMo pass happy thing couldn’t work vs air raid? I think it has to do with the tight ends . Eliminating the TE allow an offense to go wide. Automatically making the d stretch the field. Teams like LSU playing in man coverage, will be gassed by 4th qrt, like you saw today, trying to cover space.

Leach is the master at finding space.

KJ is prob at 70% comfort rate with the offense. Hold on to your butts as he matures.

An easy/simple playbook.

Repetition.

Those are the two biggest factors.

It's why Leach can get WR that no other Power 5 team wanted at Wazzu or Texas Tech and have them consistently make the plays they need to.

I'm amazed at how every phase of the game and every position seemed improved. It was an incredible transformation.

Repetition and coaches that understand what needs to be done to teach these guys to catch. It’s the reason why he has an inside receivers coach and outside receivers coach on staff.

Did you read O. Mitchell’s comment about the LSU DB’s telling him in 4Q they were tired

We haven’t had a QB with Costello’s arm talent very many times in school history. Some of those throws downfield yesterday looked like he was reaching out and handing the ball to them. He is going to put up massive numbers if he plays like that all year and be a very wealthy man next April.

Moorhead was a great guy but **** did he suck. Our WR corps looked like they belonged in the Hall of Fame.

I remember watching Moorhead’s film study after Louisiana Tech his first year. The QB and WR had so many reads.

I wonder if his complex system would work in the NFL were your paycheck depends on learning it.

Right after Leach was hired, I read about him making receivers catch tennis balls because it made them catch better. I believe it.

It’s just kind of surreal to see what our receiver production was yesterday. Yes, Shavers is new (and legit) and we are throwing it to Kylin more, but the vast majority of those guys are the same dudes that have made up the worst group of receivers in the SEC for multiple years.

Guys we are three years removed from our leading receiver for an entire season having like 230 yards. Mitchell or Payton might get that in one game before the season is over.

I do think one thing that is very helpful is we have tremendous size with this group. This isn’t like we had many years under Mullen where our tallest gut might be right at six foot. We’ve got some freaking giants out there.

I knew our WR play would be better this year but yesterday was literally the best possible start they could’ve had.

Hold off on bashing Moorhead too much. His transition to a pass-first offense (beginning 2 years ago) a big reason we are able to have some success this year.

Costello is a big reason, Shavers is another. Mitchell and Payton being seniors helps too. Williams is older.

Then you add in the scheme and coaching and it's really not that shocking.

There’s no magic-it’s just intense practices and repetition. All through camp, pretty much every player said the same thing about how they ran the same play over and over and over again. Leach demands damn near perfect execution, and he drills these plays into the minds of these players. The way that translates on the field is every player knows what he is responsible for without having to think about it. It becomes second nature-unlike Moorhead’s offense where they were too busy thinking of what they were supposed to do instead of just doing it.

I agree with another person who mentioned the tennis balls. Having to catch a couple of hundred tennis balls off a JUGS machine every day should make catching a football a lot easier. Costello throws a pretty ball, too-which is a huge help. Just my thoughts.

No. It wasn't. Let's get rid of the myth of Moorhead's passing offense right now. Last year, we ran the ball 40 times per game and threw it 24. 2 years ago, we ran 39 times and threw 25. Both of those are right in line with Mullen's run/pass ratio. Of course, no matter if he ran or passed, he didn't do much of anything well. So no, he had nothing to do with us transitioning to Leach's offense.

Based on an admittedly very small sample size (one game), I'm thinking we've never had a Quarterback with KJ's arm talent. I saw numerous NFL caliber throws.

What the 17 you smoking?
Truth serum.

You really shouldn’t try to argue this point, it’s a fact what Moorhead was trying to do. If you want to give Cohen the credit, I could go with that. He was bound and determined to go to a passing offense so we could beat Bama. He currently appears to be a genius.

Moorhead is a great guy but a terrible head coach. He had zero to do with what we saw yesterday on the field. I do give him some credit for his recruiting, but that's where it stops. Yesterday was the first time we've looked competent as a football team since Mullen left.

Go watch the first 7 minutes of the Auburn game and be reminded that Moorhead is a very good person and a completely out of his depth Power 5 HC who gets no credit for yesterday (except sucking badly enough to get us to Leach).

I don’t think you comprehend my point.

Moorhead would have lost the game. That doesn’t matter. But he had started transitioning the roster to a passing offense, and he had started implementing those concepts. That eased the transition to Leach and allowed quicker success.

None of this is saying Moorhead is a good coach.

He only ran it because his own scheme didn’t work. But make no mistake, he wanted to throw. See Kentucky 2018 before he finally wised up.

I’m believing it too. Our receivers attacked the ball like I’ve never seen our receivers do yesterday. And their hands were like glue for the most part.

I think Leach brought in some of that old-school, wax-on-wax-off Mr. Miyagi **** like catching tennis balls (in addition to simplifying the scheme).

Is that you Joe?
He talked that ****, but it was false. His WR coach quit too. We learned nothing from his lazy ***. Our passing game was trash under him, just like everything else.

Whaaaaa? Moorhead’s offense has nothing to do with the success of Leach’s offense.

You are probably one of the people who gave Croom credit for Mullen’s success.

Moorhead had our guys thinking way too much. All the pre snap reads and then reading defenders in the middle of the play to decide what route to run. Just too much. When you’re thinking that much it’s hard to play fast.

Mike Leach has a system where you can just line up and run your route and play fast. Makes it easier to execute and more fun and easy for the receivers.

The constant running all across the field by LSU LB’s and DB’s WORE THEM OUT. By the 3rd and 4th quarters we had an extra step on them just because of fatigue alone.

We have a QB putting the ball right on em. I can’t count how many times Nick Fitz would miss an open man with a ball behind the receiver or over thrown. K.J. was putting balls in the perfect spot with receivers in stride. It was beautiful.
