What is Chris Ash's Vision??

I ain’t going back and counting but Id bet it’s more than 2. Al mixes good points with bulls*** and like I said above, he totally changed his tune now with Schiano’s early recruiting (giving NY and Florida the credit they deserve). This entire thread’s premise is “Ash’s vision is unclear”; I say that’s bulls***. Hell, Al originally tried to argue Flood had ‘more vision’; I guess copying what Schiano did on paper while driving the program into a bridge embankment constitutes ‘vision’. If the thread was titled, “Ash’s vision is missing the mark”, again, DIFFERENT STORY...but that’s not the case because Al just likes to stir the pot (now he knows Leonard was a superstar from his senior year of HS and what happened with Nate “doesn’t matter”. Gimmie a f’n break.)

...and perhaps the biggest point of all- this is all 20/20 hindsight. Al wants to know who the ‘next Leonard is’; well, why don’t you actually let season 3 play out first?
My (and many others) point is, ‘why not give Ash an honest chance without trying to tear him down?’ Because he took away ‘Chop’? Now I actually think that was wrong myself, but Ash hasn’t embarrassed us by going to Princeton in disguise or writing one of the dumbest emails I’ve ever heard of in my life, and as far as I know he’s not on pace to land us on NCAA probation. If I gave the guy who did all that a chance, I think I owe Ash at least as much.

Joe P.

Flood carried over Schiano's vision and strategies so there was never any question regarding their viability. Everyone knew what Flood's vision was because it was Schiano's.

Brian Leonard WAS a superstar, especially during his senior year of high school. Don't bother looking for a Brian Leonard on the roster because he isn't there.

http://www.ogd.com/article/20120630/DCO02/706309873/0/ogd

A four-year standout at Gouverneur Central where he once set New York State high school records for scoring and yardage, Leonard relayed his experience at the Rutgers football camp into an outstanding career where he helped elevate the Scarlet Knights to national prominence. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams and spent two season there before making the move to the Bengals.

I get it that you don't want people to level any criticism at Ash. For you, no criticism will be valid. Its also great that you're lauding Ash for avoiding Kyle Floods pitfalls, but its too bad that you can't laud him for his recruiting or his results on the football field. You keep bashing Kyle, but the fact is, Kyles worst season is equivalent to Ash's best.

Chris Ash is getting paid $2M+ to deliver results, and the results he has delivered just aren't good enough. I think he can be a great coach but he's got to do a better job of messaging and establishing a clear vision/identity for the program. We need clear value proposition that NJ recruits will find compelling, so that players like Ronnie Hickman and others will at least give us a look, rather than blowing us off. McNulty's value proposition of getting kids ready for the NFL, is an example of something i think recruits would find compelling.

If Ash starts recruiting better and winning we will all magically see and understand his Vision for Rutgers or we just won't care what it is . We wouldn't have a huge thread on this if he actually was getting the top New Jersey recruits to buy in and sign with us. As long as we win, no one will give two ***** what his Vision is. Just win baby!

True. If ash were getting enough of the best NJ recruits to buy in, and winning, i wouldn't care, because he'd be delivering the results i crave.

But its hard to get recruits to believe in Rutgers if you don't have an effective message. In terms of developing football players, I think we have a program that's as good as any. Now we've got to go out and effectively tell the world about it.

What do you mean, not true. Off course its true. I pointed out earlier that Schiano's recruiting strategy always was the state of rutgers and florida. Davon Clark, Ryan Neill, Rikki Cook and Brad Cunningham were Top NJ recruits Schiano landed in his first class.
You do realize that is a roughly 20 year old recruiting strategy? Today's environment is different. People would have run Ash out of town immediately if he announced his plan was to dust off a 20 year old strategy.

If you just posted that last paragraph, this would get a thumbs-up...but you just can’t help but push your bs ‘gimmick’. Its a shame because you have some good points, but you insist on burying them in a bunch of gimmicky schtick.

Alot of being a HC is a being a GREAT salesman. Frost and Durkin, for example, seem to have very good lively / sales personalities and that translates into recruits buying into the program.

Meyer, Franklin, Harbaugh work at top brands (a built in advantage). But still it is obvious they have they work on being top notch salesmen / recruiters.

He could call it something different and no one would care.

It's a recruiting strategy that worked for us for 17 years, and would be effective today, as it was then.

The biggest difference between what Ash did after he started and Schianos strategy is that Ash recruited Ohio and Georgia, and avoided Florida. We have recruited 1 player from Florida or Georgia, despite our best efforts. That's a very poor return on investment. Thankfully, he's seen the light, and offered 32 Florida recruits this year, the 2nd most State with Rutgers offers after New Jersey.

I'm excited to come home. That is probably the thing that I take the most pride in is coming home. I'm a Pennsylvania boy with a Penn State heart, and so excited to be here.

My background growing up in Eastern Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. My dad is from Pittsburgh, so I would spend all my summers and holidays in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My dad was from the Hill District, Bedford Avenue. I grew up just outside of Philadelphia in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania boy with a Penn State heart, and couldn't be more proud. I think I'm the right guy to come back and unite this state. Unite this state and bring this program back to where I think it can be.

Recruiting Strategy:

COACH FRANKLIN: I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but we're going to dominate the state. That is the first thing that we're going to do. I believe in the high school coaches in this state. I know how well [players are] coached and developed. I know how talented this state is as well. I know how important football is here. I think that's very, very important. So that is the first thing we're going to do. We're going to work very, very hard and put a staff together that will help us dominate the state of Pennsylvania.

Then obviously being able to recruit aggressively in this region as well. New Jersey, obviously Pennsylvania, New York, New England, Virginia, Delaware has been very good to Penn State traditionally. I think also we were going to take a national approach by position. We will do that as well. So everybody will have recruiting areas, everybody will be in the state. Every one of our staff members will have an area in the state. We'll also have areas in the region and the states that surround Pennsylvania.

We'll recruit nationally as well, because I think you sell yourself short when you don't do that. We could have a Penn State alumni in California whose son always grew up wanting to go to Penn State. So having the ability to recruit nationally so that we're aware of where all the great players are in this country, I think that's important. But our team will be comprised and mainly made up of Pennsylvania young men.

COACH FRANKLIN: You can take it as a guy that is passionate about being at Penn State. You can take it as a guy that takes tremendous pride in the high school players from this state. You can take it as a guy that has the utmost respect for the high school coaches in this state. And what we're going to do is we're going to get everybody to understand that if we all buy into what Penn State is all about, and everybody's pulling the rope in the same direction, and everybody's saying if we stay home that we've got a chance to build something very special, and then accent those young men that stay home with talent from surrounding areas and nationally, that the sky is the limit for us.

So we're just going to focus on Penn State. We're going to focus on how great that we can be by waking up every morning and maximizing that day. Again, we're going to focus on us. By focusing on us, we're going to be able to reach our dreams.

He didn't start with plenty. But he started with enough to win more than 2 games year 1. Hiring DM set Rutgers Football back significantly, while our biggest competitor, Penn State, made a terrific hire in Joe Moorhead and flourished.

PSU is NOT Rutgers is NOT PSU. We don’t have half the resources or football reputation they do. It would take a monumental screwup to NOT recruit well there.

Wasn’t that in Franklin’s 3rd year, not first? That’s what I mean about misleading statements. PSU’s offense was considered lousy 2014-2015 with numerous PSU fans claiming Franklin ‘ruined’ Hackenberg.

I’m talking about the hiring of Moorehead (for the record). Seemed fairly obvious, especially with Al mentioning DM and then saying ‘Franklin hired Moorhead’ in the next statement...but something tells me he knew that all along. It’s exactly what I mean by misleading and ‘schtick’.

Gotcha,

Yea I don’t think you can compare the two. Psu actually hired John Donovan initially and fired him after 2 years. But they were also trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with hackenberg. He never fit the system.

DM was just an awful hire, no 2 ways around it. I’ve never seen an offense on a D1 program as bad as ours was in 2016.

USF 2013 would have made that a tight race but they beat two FBS programs so we get the nod in that one. Your first point is exactly what I was getting at; Al made it seem like Franklin hired Moorhead right from the start. Hell, PSU fans were lining up Franklin’s replacements after the Gator Bowl loss. I was never one of those ‘Franklin can’t coach’ guys; the guy won at Vandy. Even he made mistakes early on...but PSU resources go a long way in being able to make amends.

Al, you are so blind and really have no clue to what happens if you are a coach relocating to a new area and environment. Your first year or so you usually will often refer to and work with reliable contacts you already have made. In Sciano's case he relied on Florida as well as NJ roots. Ash would naturally look at Midwestern and especially Ohio and work on building on existing NJ roots thru Rutgers itself and hired key staff. One of his best hires in this respect has been and continues to be Rick Mantz. As we shall see bringing back McNulty is another one and the additions this year are excellent. What he inherited was a negative nightmare that in essence needed a cultural changed. Was he perfect the first year or so....not 100% but dealing with some of the infrastructure and even top administrative support has not been easy. Hobbs thank goodness has been one to provide much leadership and assistance all around. So please back off on some of the negatives you try to put on Ash and especially on recruiting. This year's class in spite of what you may think will prove to be solid. 2019's class is no doubt a key one and as is the team's performance this fall. Until we play games this fall whatever is posted is nothing but pure speculation so let's try to accentuate the pluses as you have often done as opposed to the negatives and permit things to play out first. Just think back to Greg's first couple of years before his plans took hold...the same here now.

FWIW, I saw Coach Ash speak at the Glazier Coaches Clinic in AC two weeks ago. He definitely has a plan but to bring Rutgers back to the bowl games (at the very least). He basically said Rutgers is slowly but surely rebuilding back up to the pre Flood days and expects to be in a bowl game this season. He is trying to establish better relationships with NJ HS coaches and players. Here's hoping he gets the job done and after listening to him speak to the HS coaches, I wouldn't bet against him happening.

We did not have the talent to win significantly more than 2 games. Maybe a better coordinator would have gotten us a 3rd win.

MyHatHasHisHeadUpHisAzz: we all know recruiting is not where it needs to be.It hasn’t been since 2012.The program was diving for the 2 years prior to Ash.Combine all the off field BS and it will take at minimum of 2-3 more solid classes. There are some on this board who make the claim 2019 will see a significant upgrade. It has Wise and Hayek so far. The jury is out but we still need to combat the $$$$ difference of our conference mates and that is still 4 years out .Sorry but in this B1G conference we are waaaay behind. The UCF / Scott Frost turn around was an entirely different animal...no comparison simply because of the teams in that conference. Frost had much more in the way of talent and support. You have seen the facilities there? We are at minimum a 5-6 year rebuild. Sorry but when these two classes are Jrs./ Srs. We may reach mid pack. Possibilty Ash will not be here as coach.

Now i see what others mean when they say you are making misleading or false statements of omission. You cite CA hiring DM as his first OC and compare it to Franklin hiring Moorhead as OC when the truth is Franklin's first OC hire was not Moorhead. It took a few seasons of absolutely horrible offensive play before Franklin finally got it right and hired Moorhead.

Before Moorhead, PSU had a very competent OC in John Shoop, who left for more money in Tennessee.

Love it when rutgersal makes statements that are far from true...17 years of top recruiting under Schiano / Flood eras was actually perhaps 10 years at best ...even then we were a team winning only about 75 % ... Flood ‘s issues became evident when we got our asses kicked at Home against Kent State... What were we 8-0 or 9-0 and ranked at 15 in the country. He was totally befuddled and as time passed the gap in talent became more and more. We wish we had 17 years of top recruiting.

Wrong. Bob Shoop was the former DEFENSIVE coordinator at PSU who left Franklin in the dust because he knew the guy is only as good as his coordinators.

Why you are even comparing us in any way to PSU is beyond everyone on this board. A blind dog could recruit kids to Pedo U, scandal or not. The recruits and their parents are blinded by the football worship there.

I know you don’t understand our footing in the college football landscape, but comparisons to 40 year blue bloods is completely off base.

Please tell me what Franklin's vision is? Almost everything he said can be copy/paste for every elite program in the country. OSU/Meyer could have said the exact same thing. JH and Mich, etc...There is not a damn thing that is unique or that sets JF's vision apart. The difference is that programs like PSU/OSU/Mich can say those things and be pretty confident they have have the pick of everyone they want in their state. Rutgers/Indiana/MSU etc cannot say that keeping their talent home is their vision and actually be able to do it.

The difference is that programs like PSU/OSU/Mich can say those things and be pretty confident they have have the pick of everyone they want in their state. Rutgers/Indiana/MSU etc cannot say that keeping their talent home is their vision and actually be able to do it.

The point is they have a vision and we don’t. Uniqueness doesn’t matter.

Didn’t say top recruiting. It was competitive recruiting which gave us enough talent to be credible. Even in Floods last year, where we only won 4 games, we had three more games where we were competitive:

- falling to WSU 37-34
- falling to MSU 31-24
- falling to MD 46-41

The sad part of this if Ash is successful (and sorry to all those that think Ash won't get it done - one knows yet if he will be or won't be) Al will be the first one blowing smoke up Ash's ***.

I think
Ash can get it done, but he's got to
Improve his recruiting.

James Franklin hired Joe Moorhead in 2016. Chris Ash hired DM for the 2016 season. This is why it’s fair to compare. There’s nothing misleading.

LOL GTFO!!!!!:joy::joy::joy::joy::joy: Absolute joke status right now. One guy in his 3rd year as HC at PSU, 7/8th year as a HC overall, the other guy in his 1st year as HC at a rebuilding program with 1/3rd the budget...oooohhh we were competitive with 3-9 Maryland who ran for 600 yards on us oooooooohh....

Vision is pretty simple, gotta get better players!
The first 2 OC's show a lack of vision.

I'm quite sure Ash has a vision.

Every HC has one.

The more relevant question (imo) is can Ash SELL his vision.

And I mean sell it to the caliber of kids that will ultimately make Rutgers a successful program.

That's up in the air at the moment.

BINGO. *This* is the real question.

Fair enough on Shoop.

Since Greg Schiano started at Rutgers, we have been able to win our share of recruits against Penn State, despite their advantages, though we did lose more than we won. Nevertheless, He articulated the dream and sold it. And he got recruits to visit, even if they didn’t choose Rutgers in the end.

BlueBlood or not, we’ve got to do a better job recruiting against them and everyone else. Micah Clark chose Rutgers over Penn State, so it can be done.
