He did not handle it well and presumably got some lousy advice, however Hobbs timing on when he fired Ash contributed to this situation and Sit's decision probably planted a seed with RB. He is a talented player and while we may have some depth there, we could certainly use him. If he wanted to come back, I think the smart thing for Schiano to do would be to get a full understanding of the situation from Nunz including the reaction of the team to his decision at the time. If he burned his bridges with this team mates then its time for him to move on. If GS and team are willing to bring him back with a clean slate then they should do so and we should not allow this to linger. I don't see him being a captain again next year under any circumstances.

What're you talking about? Since when have we brought a guy on scholarship, then taken his scholarship away in the absence of off the field issues? Stop making up stuff to fit your argument. I think it's even against B1G rules to take away the scholarship.
So did Hobbs first. Then Sit which I understand even more than what Blackshear did and then yes, finally Blackshear threw in the towel. Why can’t everyone just let it go? Why all the hate? Kid made a mistake and was advised by an agent to do what he did. I don’t like it but get over it for Christ’s sake.
As much as I love Nunz he should have been a little more tight lipped about this knowing the nature of our fans. He threw the kid under the bus. If I were Nunz I would have been fuming but I wouldn’t have torched the kid.
Peppers sat out his bowl game and the team sucked in it. Now I root for him on Sundays. Again, I don’t like it but I’m not a hater. Such a waste or emotion by our fans who should be using that energy for positive things.

I am in the minority too. I can see the view of people that say he quit but even if he did, kids make mistakes. If he was reading this board in September, he probably thought they were going to shut down RU football permently.

Maybe people do deserve a second chance. Not for me to decide. I refuse to boo one of our players, but I won't be applauding either.
Since Blackshear was a captain we know that his teammates respected and liked him. I would think they want him back if he is willing. Won’t surprise me if he ends up at Temple.
Since Sit quit earlier in the same week maybe this influenced Blackshear to redshirt as well? Still not an excuse for the way he did it.

Not sure why Art gets that free pass. So he told the team a few days earlier, but the starter went down. He still quit on his team regardless of whether he was supposed to redshirt or not.
If Schiano wants him back that’s fine because we don’t have a lot of choices.
Both quit on their team to some extent. I would be fine if neither played for RU again.
However, as has been covered extensively, given the circumstances, Blackshear’s decision to quit was more egregious than Sit’s.
Probably waiting for a decent program to offer a ship. Figure he's unlikely to get a waiver, so he'd cost a program 2 yrs for 1 season of production. With regular LOI period still to come, he might not get a spot until early spring. Depends on who missed out on RB's and whether they can get by with portal grads vs sitout transfers. He's risking a lot if he doesn't have a spot by late signing day.

Since he didn't jump right back in when Greg was hired, I think we should assume he is not coming back. Pacheco is a great back and we'll get another one to work with him.

I live two hours away and have literally dragged both my family and badgered my friends into going to games for years. I am that fanatic who turns almost every sports conversation back to a connection to RU somehow. In my playing days, I brought a never say die attitude and played to the whistle or final out. It’s what I believe. As a fan, I never left until the Alma Mater was sung. My wife was 9 months pregnant and I went to the RU-WVU game. The list goes on.
This year, the AD gave up on the season after the third game. Players and coaches who have similarly dedicated themselves for the love of the sport and their school were told in an instant it was ok to give up. I found it outrageous to show such disregard for their efforts or my dedication, not to mention money. I did not attend another game, which is saying something. Hobbs showed his true colors and so did the state of Rutgers in saying no more, we deserve better.

This. You can't as a player unilaterally choose to red shirt. You can work with the team to decide what's best playing time wise (red shirt) or you can do it yourself as a player. Quit.

Raheem had enough of Ash and Hobbs just like the rest of us. I completely understand how he felt his talents were wasted here. I personally don’t blame him for doing what was right for him after witnessing Ash’s terrible, disjointed, nonsensical decisions as coach. We’d all had enough.

If this were true, then why did he quit *after* Ash was fired? Why didn't he transfer out after last season, like 30% of our season ticket holders?

Whether he should have acted on it or not, Blackshear had the right to look out for himself. He chose to pick himself over the team. Life is about choices. If he wanted the fan base to unconditionally support him (and I doubt he cares) he wouldn’t have tapped out on the season. He opted to call it a season so of course he shouldn’t expect the fans to still show him the same support. Seems pretty simple to me.
