Let's say that we somehow win the SECT and make the NCAA. And we win it with this team.
Would you still want Cal gone? Would you still dislike this team?
Obviously this isn't going to happen, but what if it did? How would it make you feel?
For me, it would be very weird. Maybe bitter sweet? lol I don't know.
We have two completely independent issues: 1) What this team does this year. and 2) the one-and-done grand strategy.
We have a good idea about number one, and frankly, now that the shock of how bad we are is over, anyone should not really sweat what happens the rest of this season. It is highly improbable that we will lose our first game of the SECT, and this dreadful season will come to a merciful end. Most of that blame can go on one person who let this happen like it did and who recruited the make up of this team.
It is the second issue that is most important. We returned one kid from last year, except for an injured Dontaie Allen, who in essence, is a first year player because of his ACL. One kid. That's inconceivable that you could then field any kind of a decent team with just one returnee. In any normal program, at least Hagans and Montgomery return to form an experienced nucleus to go with some transfers and a (now we know, only a good--not great) recruiting class. No program can sustain excellence when you return one player. Covid difficulties notwithstanding, it is Cal's leadership of this program that has caused this team to be the worst (by far) in our history. The problems since 2015, and his coaching in the Wisconsin game are well documented, but we have missed significantly in recent years on the recruiting trail and now we find ourselves in this predicament with not lots of hope for next year or the immediate future. That, is much more worrisome than the rest of this year.
