What benefit does Hugh get for resigning?

OM gets a lot of benefit, from public perception. Hugh, however, gets nothing. Any show cause that's on the table won't be taken off the table if he resigns. Hugh also loses a gigantic buyout.

Again, what does Hugh gain from this? Less stress? The only way this happens is if he is paid off something close to his buyout.

Hugh will not be receiving any buyout if he is terminated by Ole Miss. If he is terminated, it will be for cause (every coach has a clause about NCAA issues being cause for termination in their contract) & he will get ZERO.

He might be able to negotiate a buyout to resign now & go away quietly.

He will get his paycheck until they fire him which could be a year from now. That is plenty of motivation to not resign.

Maybe he just wants to get away from all of this? Let's be honest, he's not exactly a pillar of strength when it comes to people using his name. He has come across as rather thin-skinned on multiple occasions.

This would make the most sense. If a show cause is inevitable and could happen right around the start of football season it would be a hell of a lot more damaging to the program than if he were paid to leave now.

Maybe he was made an offer that makes it worth it.

He gets to finish his narrative. He has been scorned, ridiculed, punished.... now he will be crucified for the sins of others. He is going for full martyrdom.

Wonder how head coaches get paid? Monthly, yearly,or just during the season.

I would think he would resign with a buyout now so UM can try to lessen penalties. Like other people said if he gets a show clause or just gets suspended then they have an interim head coach for the whole season. If they search now then they can hope to get a better coach and not mention the new investigation for the last recruiting class.

Stole this from ED .. posted by Johnson85 ..

Could always be a negotiated settlement of a portion of the remainder of his contract.
Pretty damn short negotiation.

Chancellor: hey Hugh, ***** hitting the fan. Going to have to ask for your resignation.
Freeze: what about my contract?
Chancellor: what about it. We sort of have cause to fire you. What kind of buyout are you thinking?
Freeze: well, I did exactly what I was asked and bought the best recruiting class money could buy for Oxford MS. Plus, if you trust the interwebz, I could have this thing coming up that could cost me half my money. I think you should pay my entire contract so I don't burn this ***** to the ground on my way out.
Chancellor: Deal.

I think at this point they'd have an interim anyway. Who is taking on that job not knowing the penalties?

It would be a huge gamble if they thought offering up Hugh would limit the bleeding. If they get a multiple year bowl ban, then that opens the gate for players transferring out without penalty. That's a program killer.

But firing Hugh doesn't guarantee they won't get that anyway. So they roll the dice either way. It's akin to ... let's say a certain coach deciding to burn a redshirt on a 5-star QB in hopes of making a bowl and losing in spectacular fashion. You know... typical Ole Miss meltdown.

Can you imagine the ____show of a Huge Freeze-led spring practice? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to witness a Grove Bowl and 252 ppl there, but I think a change will occur b4 spring practice

I don't think so. If they didn't fire him last Wednesday, they're not going to. They're going to fight this to the bitter end. And really, at this point, they may as well. They passed the point of no return a long time ago.

Personally, don't see them firing Hugh before NCAA announces penalties. From the OM presser .. they had the NCAA NOA and now know the charges.

If he wasn't fired or didn't resign at that moment, don't see it happening this spring.

Vitter, Bjork and Bucky 'circled' the wagons. When/If a 'show cause' for Bucky or a 'lack of institutional control' is issued, two of the three 'blind mice' are toast.

If he can negotiate a buyout and resign from tsun he gets more than if he waits for a show cause.....in that case they fire him and he gets nothing.
Of course I know this from reading the fine print in his contract I carry around in my back pocket**

He gets to say he wasn't fired. If he resigns, I think they pay his salary until the penalties are announced which is when he would lose his job anyway.
