Last month I read "Original Sin." You know, the one that got all the buzz in the spring. I recommend it, as long as you are willing to be somewhat angry in the process.

Two other recent ones were by acclaimed historian Rick Atkinson. One was his second volume on the American Revolutionary War, and the other was volume three of his WW II trilogy.

As something completely different, I just checked out John Scalzi's old "Red Shirts" novel. I saw him speak for the second time at a local book festival this spring, the same as where I listened to Rick Atkinson. Scalzi is quite entertaining in person. Because I had already read his most recent books, I went back in his catalog.

Love Rick Atkinson. I really got a lot out of his two books on the Revolutionary War. As a former Navy Officer, it reminded me of our strategy in Vietnam, where we were all powerful but never really controlled any territory outside the coastal areas.

Just started Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger. Seems like it’ll be a good cold weather, scenic, whodunnit. I like books like this when the weather starts getting colder.

Because I read "Original Sin," I wanted to read Kamala Harris's "107 Days" to see if she said much interesting or relevant. She didn't. Not a good book.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. Fantastic book, well-researched and written, describing the "Great Migration" of African Americans from the southern US to the Northeast, Midwest and West from 1915-1970.

Brilliant book. Have you read Caste?

Louise Penny’s The Beautiful Mystery. I’ve stopped and started this one a couple of times. It’s a Gamache mystery and not bad but also not as good thus far as her stories set in Three Pines.

Anyone else read Amor Towles' A Gentleman in Moscow? I'm about halfway into it and it is incredible. I was given the book as a gift and honestly didn't expect it to be nearly as good as it has been. Maybe the second half will be a dud but if not, I can't recommend this book enough.

Recently finished Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I'd seen a lot of praise for this book--and truthfully I can understand why (it's definitely unique and sets a tone)--but I thought the book needed more backstory. Give us more about the Judge, or actually give us more about Glanton. Some may say that the less description the better--leave the monsters mysterious--but I think that is just worry that the back stories wouldn't be worthy of the characters.

I'm halfway through the second volume of the (planned) trilogy by Rick Atkinson on the American Revolution. The third volume is yet to be published.

Let me say -- reading about the American Revolution is tougher slog than many other areas of American or world history.

0 The Revolution lasted 8 years compared to 4 years for the Civil War or WWI ... or ... perhaps 6 years for WWII.

0 There was a lot more downtime .... fewer major battles.

0 Other than Washington and Greene and Cornwallis and a few others -- the characters are not nearly as well known to me as other wars. I believe like many people I'm something of a visual thinker. If it's the Battle of Atlanta between Hood and Sherman -- I can readily picture who each those men were. On the other hand -- how many people would instantly recognize William or Richard Howe -- key players on the British side in the Revolution.

This is by far the craziest, most eye opening book I've ever read. The stuff some of the Delta Force guys have been able to get away with over the years is shocking and disgusting.

Just got some ARCs sent from a publisher. Reading Henry Wise’s Promised Land. He’s the new king of Southern gothic in my opinion. Great guy too.
