Trump just said he told Abe that we’re not being paid properly to defend Japan and Abe said he understood. Anyone with experience dealing with Asia would know that Abe was saying “I understand the words you are saying” not “I agree with what you are saying.”

Thanks, that treaty was signed in 1951! Do you think the world has changed? China and NK was not a threat of invasion when it was signed. He has never said that he does not want to help defend Japan, just that we don't get anything in return. At the time it was signed, we did not allow Japan to have a Navy or Army and it allowed us to place our forces close to Russia. That is not the case any more. Japan is no longer a threat and China and NK is the major threat in that part of the world.
At the time, I think what we got was Japan not rebuilding its military and in exchange we would provide military protection for them. I think that Japan was supposed to pay some but I don't know how much. DT can fuss with them all he wants.
I agree. Kind of funny, but the treaty was also to protect Korea and China because at that time Japan was the aggressor in the area.
I still can't get over fact we have not changed our postal rate agreement since that time either. You may hate Trump but he is actually taking action against some pretty old and outdated agreements that should have been addressed 20 years ago.
