Maybe it’s because rankings aren’t based on a single game? Iowa has been much better than Nebraska for how many straight years now? The rankings should not surprise you.
I think this explains it right here. It is possible for a motivated inferior team to occasionally beat a superior team. And Iowa has had the more consistent program over the past eight years. I might be wrong, but I do not think they have had a single losing season in those eight years. We had seven with the one winning season (2016) being very mediocre even as a winning season. One good win over Oregon -- a team which turned out to be not the typical "Oregon" that year -- and the rest just sloppy wins over bad teams and bad losses to good teams.
In other words... we have not looked good at all in 8 years. And now we have an entirely new staff and new schemes and a huge roster overhaul with tons of unproven new faces. I think most sport's writers think Rhule is a good coach and that "in time" he will have Nebraska back to at least Pelini levels of respectability. But just not this year. I think most writers think 6-6 is our ceiling.
This is why Iowa is rated this year ahead of us. I hate Iowa. Hate. But let's be honest here. They deserve to be ranked higher than we are right now.
In Rhule I trust.
