RR's wins over the three years are somewhat tainted due to the lackluster schedule which was evidenced by the fact that the Automatic Qualifier status was eventually taken away. 1. WVU did not get rid of Dana. He was offered a 5 year, 20 million guaranteed contract at Houston. WVU definitely would have needed to exceed that offer to keep him given Dana's preference for Texas over West Virginia. Also Dana hasn't done better at Houston than he had at WVU despite a much easier schedule and situation.

2. There are two separate decisions here and not a binary choice as you imply. There is the decision not to compete with Dana's offer from Houston and the decision on who replaced Dana after he ultimately took the offer from Houston. The latter being a disaster does not affect the former at all. Say an addict is slowly killing himself with alcohol. This person then quits alcohol, but takes up heroin and dies of an overdose soon after. By your logic the decision to stop alcohol is as wrong as the decision to take up heroin, but this is not a choice of one or the other. The decision to stop alcohol and the slow death (letting Dana go) was correct. The decision to start heroin (hiring Neal Brown) was wrong.

UH has no incentive for season tickets sold. Unless the Cougars are playing a Top 25 or Power 5 opponent, UH struggles to sell out the fairly new TDECU Stadium. That is likely the biggest reason that Houston has no incentives for season tickets sold.

Pretty sure the point is that when all you care about is offense and still lose your big games in shoot outs repeatedly, it shows you are not ready to really win a conference like the Big 12. The time Holgorsen won 10 games at WVU was when he had the best defense he had ever had and one of the worst offenses. It was also a relative down year for the conference. Either way Holgorsen after 8 years showed little growth and was not ready to put WVU on the level Nehlen or RR did. No way did he earn a 5 year, 20 million guaranteed commitment from WVU. This is completely separate from the decision on WHO was hired to replace Holgorsen and the stupid contract extension. Two things can, and in this case are, true at once.

1. Holgorsen had not done enough in 8 years at WVU to earn the contract commitment Houston was willing to give him.

2. Hiring Brown and then extending him was an incredibily stupid move. Maybe even more so than extending Holgorsen. But one decision being more stupid than another does not make the alternative smart.

I would imagine the WVU HC job would have been a prime and highly sought opening after Rodriguez left. If only we had conducted a national search and had a quality AD to navigate it. Pastilong was in over his head by that point. A lot of “what ifs” starting with that WVU/Pitt finale. The loss that destroyed the program.
