Western wraps up JD tourney crown

That’s Western Albemarle’s resume. Not too shabby, huh?
The Warrior golf team continues to add to its legacy after showcasing its depth in winning the JD Tournament on a gusty, dreary afternoon at Old Trail Golf Course. WAHS (316 strokes) topped second-place Orange County (325) and third-place William Monroe (331), despite its No. 3 golfer, Paige Miller, sitting out of the lineup due to illness.
Western coach Darren Maynard, the Jefferson District Co-Coach of the Year along with Monroe’s Ronnie Morris, responded to Miller’s illness by bumping up Jeff Snyder to No. 3, Will Sampson to No. 4, Raleigh Davis to No. 5 and Quinn Sweeney to No. 6.
Snyder (77), Sampson (81), Davis (82) and No. 1 golfer Cory Amory (76) each posted top four scores to lock the JD Tournament title.
“Depth is something we’ve been working on lately,” Maynard said. “We’ve tried to develop our No. 5 and our No. 6. They have really come a long way this season. Depth is something you have to have in the postseason. It’s hard to win with just four golfers.”
Western qualified for the Region II Championship, set for Oct. 6 at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal, by virtue of winning the regular-season crown. Because the Warriors also won the JD Tourney, runner-up Orange earned the regional nod.
Brad Weaver (78), Robert Bodendorf (79), Zach Darnell (82) and Spencer Brookman (86) logged the top four scores for Orange.
Monticello standout Whitney Neuhauser (68) carded the lone round under par for the tournament to claim medalist honors. The senior was also named the Jefferson District Golfer of the Year.
“The whole year I was thinking a lot about my score. Today I didn’t want to think about it. I just wanted to play,” said Neuhauser, who also indicated her 68 was the lowest round she’s logged on the year. “I putted really well today and hit some clutch par putts when I needed to. I didn’t have to make any birdie putts over 15 feet. My longest birdie was from 10 feet out.”
Along with WAHS and OCHS, Neuhauser, Charlottesville’s Woods Bishop (73), Monroe’s Mike Moyers (74), Fluvanna’s Jason Focht (78) and Eric Napier (81) and Monticello’s Chad Powell (81) earned regional berths by carding the lowest six individual scores outside the two qualifying schools.
“The wind was tough today, especially on a course like this because there’s long grass and trouble on either side [of the fairway],” said Bishop, who registered a 37 on the front nine and a 36 on the back. “I only hit driver four or five times because I just didn’t feel safe on some holes.”
Moyers, a freshman, also was concerned with the gusts and wet conditions.
“I didn’t want to do anything stupid,” he said. “I hit the ball alright but didn’t putt that well. It was kind of tough with the wind and the rain. It was a pretty average day for me.”
Moyers was joined by teammate Raymond Powdrell, Western’s Jeff Snyder, Neuhauser, Napier and Focht on the All-Jefferson District first team.
